Another vote for paying for professional packers- might cost a bit more but you won't regret it as they'll save you immense amounts of hassle and time. As hazyjo says, they're worth every penny.
If you must save money by doing the unpacking do get them to unpack the bedrooms and leave the rest for you to do.

I must be odd.  I can't imagine letting anyone pack up my goods and chattels.

Last time I moved house, Luton van with tail lift and three very willing hunks of beefcake!  Very cost effective.  Nothing broken.

The last time I was involved in a house move it was me, a mate and a rented Transit van moving my borderline hoarder mother from a 4 bed detached house with a 4 car garage and an acre of garden to a new build 2 bed bungalow - it was a challenging day and not one I'm desperate to repeat in the near future...
  • Just had first quote in yesterday £950 for the move and another £570 if they pack it up for us. 4 beds EOT house to 4 bed detached about 3-4 miles up the road. Expecting another firm tomorrow to quote. Trouble is for us it's all happening very quickly suddenly, and they want to exchange next week and complete the following, so it'll come down to who's got time to move us not who has the best/cheapest quote.

Depending on the firm etc you're looking at anything between £500-£1k.
You can pay much more than £1k very easily.

We paid £1400 on the last move of 85 miles.  4 bedrooms and 3 reception rooms although they weren’t all full of stuff.  2 medium sized vans because there was a very narrow approach to the farm on which we were living.  Award winning local family firm.  They did all the packing for kitchen and dining room.  Massive number of boxes just for that.  Washing machine and dryer, dishwasher, full height fridge, full height freezer and under counter freezer, lots of large bookcases and big units in lounge.

3 men and they were efficient, put big padded bags over armchairs, tv and big mirrors.  They were worth every penny, didn’t even eat the cake and choccy bikkies I provided

Remember if anything gets damaged in boxes you may not be covered by their insurance unless they did the packing.

2 bed first floor flat, to 2 bed first floor flat, 20 mile distance, cost £200.
The guys dismantled and reassembled the bed. I did my own packing. Only took them a few hours to grab, load, drive and unload.
Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.
