Can't remember cost but I do remember 2 guys rocking up with a 2m long roll of bubble wrap. If I had bought that along with all the boxes they used  I reckon it would have cost me more than the packing fee.

If you want to save don't bother with unpacking, you can do this in your own time once you have worked out where to put the stuff. Just make sure you know where the kettle and bottle opener are along with the coffee , tea and a couple of mugs.

A couple of years ago we had a quote of £1600 to pack a 2 bed house, move 25 miles and unpack into a 3 bed house.

We decided not to go down that route and packed ourselves (which really didn't take that long) and hired a man with a van and a couple of lads to do the heavy lifting. Cost us £300 for the van plus the cost of some boxes and some bubble wrap.

The lads were great and had the van loaded up in an hour and unloaded again with everything undamaged and in the right room in an hour.
We did that last time we moved and will be hiring the same man with a van for this move.
We would certainly hire the same man and van team again. But we have no plans to move from this house :)

The distance isnt part of the cost really, unless it involves overnight. Theres the same amount of work involved whether its 1, 10 or 100 miles.

Make sure to get lots and lots of quotes. We are moving a 4 bed detached house to another 4 bed detached 40 minutes away and got quotes ranging from £550 to £1200.

We paid £990 in Jan, we packed ourselves using their box's, so this was for loading, dismantling our dining table and putting it back up, and the unloading the other end. Three bed house to a four bed town house with the lounge and kitchen on the 1st floor.

We had another quote from a much larger firm of 1.5k, they would have had more availability at short notice though. We booked our removals before Xmas, we exchanged on the 21st Jan and moved on 27th Jan so we really gambled. But we were either moving that day or not as mortgage offer expired on the 29th. And removals were stupidly busy around that time!

We paid £600 to move 1/2 of our heaviest furniture from our 3 bed house about 100 miles.
Then we paid another £500 to move another 1/2 of the furniture and 45 boxes (our own, mostly sourced free at Costco) 6 miles.
They wanted £1 per empty box but gave us a few anyway to throw some of the loose stuff I was thinking of taking in my own car.  They just took it all anyway.
I think both were good deals.
