Waxing your car

You need to use a clay bar in conjunction with a detailing spray. You need to keep the paint surface slick and lubricated in order for it to work otherwise you risk marring your paintwork. It'll do no harm just giving the car a quick clean and rinse (and dry) prior to applying the wax. If you're going the whole hog to clay then you may as well polish as well prior to waxing.Arsenal2019 said:Do you put any products on a clay bar for when removing wax ?? You need to watch some vids on youtube before attempting to clay your car, it's not for the complete novice.1 -

Just be very careful when using a clay bar, use plenty of lubricant, depending on the type of clay bar you're using some can be used with plain water, others with a designated lube. The big thing with the clay bar is if you drop it DO NOT USE it again bin it, always try and split the piece into 2 so if you do drop one you've another on hand, don't forget to use it on your windscreen/windows as well.

I would never use just plain water with a clay bar, it doesn't provide enough lubrication, although it is acceptable to use a strong soapy solution.Ian1961 said:Arsenal2019 said:Do you put any products on a clay bar for when removing wax ?? Wow there’s actually so much more to it than I thought! Anyone here recommend a decent / cheap-ish lubricant to use in conjunction with clay bar?0

Neil, I am going off the Bilt Hamber product which personally I haven't had any issues with when using water...lots of it!

Yes, I agree the Bilt Hamber clay bar is very good, probably the best imho, but I'd still want to add a bit of lubrication, even if it's just a bit of fairy liquid added to the spray bottle. Each to their own and I do take note that BH does say that water alone is fine to use with their product.Ian1961 said:neilmcl said:

Personally I use my trusty bottle of ONS mixed up as a quick detailer for the job.0 -
First time I got a clay kit, it came with a lubricating spray but now I just use water to assist in making the clay bar glide over the paintwork. I didn't want to evangelise too much about claying on this thread but I personally find it amazing how much muck it takes off the car after you have washed and would normally think its all clean at that stage. For me, its worth the extra time a couple of times per year - if you are taking the time to clay then you will be able to feel the difference and smoothness on the paintwork within 30 seconds of first use.Arsenal2019 said:Do you put any products on a clay bar for when removing wax ?? I wash first, clay and then hose the car down afterwards before moving on to the next step.1 -
