Guys.. how do you go about removing / replacing the old wax you put on your vehicle? I can’t find the reply / answer someone posted earlier

It was answered, the process of decon and polishing should remove the old wax layer or you can use a strong degreaser/alll purpose cleaner (APC). At last resort you could simply use a strong solution of Fairy liquid.

You can easily check to see if the wax is removed by running water over the car to see if it still beads or rolls off, if it does then the wax protection is still present, if it pools and stays on the surface then it's gone.

To find out if your paint is ok on your brand new car and think it needs a wax, try the sandwich bag test. Get a plastic bag (similar to the one's you use in freezers) put your hand inside the bag and run it along the paintwork. If it feels grabby it's possible it has slight bits on the paint, if it's smooth you can wax straight away.

This is a great thread, loads of different ideas and nobody adamant that their regime is best and that others are wrong.
I didnt realise that removing old wax was even a thing - probably because I dont do it often enough.

Anyway, im hoping for decent weather on the easter weekend - got a new clay bar and some other products for the car and am planning on splitting quality time between cleaning/polishing/waxing my MX5 Mk1 and (if its raining), my family

If I'm going the whole hog, then I tend to split it over 2 days. Wash, full decon, and clay on day 1, then quick wash down, polish and wax the next day. As far as waiting for decent weather, the weather at the moment is perfect, mild, still and cloudy. You don't want to be polishing and waxing your car on a sunny day.
  • True indeed. Been there & made the sunny day mistake.

Agreed, that's why the last few years i've aimed the big clean for the 4 day Easter weekend so I still have 2 days 'off'

Polish restores paintwork. Wax protects and hardens.
Polish does not restore paintwork; it removes a bit of lacquer.
Wax does protect the paintwork but does not harden it.
Is that or good thing or a bad thing?
It’s good if you have some light surface scratches in the lacquer, removing a thin layer makes it nice and smooth again.
No one has ever become poor by giving
