NatWest closing my 2 Reward accounts out of the blue
Comments
-
Someone else had their Santander current accounts closed down about a year ago for doing virtually the same thing. There was nothing in the T&Cs preventing them from opening more than one account in that case. The term being enforced in the T&C is the one about ending the agreement, which does not require a specific breach of the terms from the customer. Most likely it was the behaviour in relation to the overdrafts in and of itself that led to this result.kaMelo said:
Whilst I agree there is no way the OP will ever find out the real reason, I think the evidence proves the contrary that they do enforce the terms when they find infringements. They're just a bit slow and/or not very good at finding them.colsten said:
Exactly. There is also more than one MSE Forumite who has more than one sole Natwest (and RBS) Reward. So one could go as far a saying there is evidence that they do not enforce it but perhaps it's best to leave it right here.zzyzx1221 said:But I suppose technically speaking that isn't evidence of enforcement.
Totally agree. That's why I said earlier that unless a miracle happens and Natwest tell the OP why they did what they did, we'll never know.zzyzx1221 said:
Then again, if we're going to go down that route there's no evidence that Natwest are shutting it down for the overdrafts, or I suppose any evidence that Natwest shut people's accounts down for fraud, suspected money laundering or a whole host of things as they never seem to divulge the reasons why they're shutting accounts down in the goodbye letters.

Pure speculation, as there is no evidence that Natwest (or RBS) enforce that a 2nd Reward account must be in joint names.ratechaser said:it does sound a lot more likely that it's the 2 sole reward accounts rather than the o/d applications that have triggered this.

I never take overdrafts but I've consistently had high limits on credit cards - and I don't see the point in trying to game the system. Credit is there as a tool for your benefit. I don't think requesting changes and trying to outthink the algorithms will work for most people. I can't recollect ever asking for a change to a credit limit, nor refusing one that is offered.
Every time you adjust something or make a change will draw attention to yourself. Opening a new account and adding an overdraft may have been enough to trigger a manual review of your accounts.

I mean possibly a touch of nervousness from anyone else that may have a couple of sole reward accounts, just in case Natwest decide that they are fair game for closure...colsten said:

This in interesting. I got the same letter on same day more or less. Mine said the same and that they were closing my reward and digital saver. I Have no O/D. I am miffed as I also work in the Emergency Services. I have made a complaint but don't expect to hear anything positive. I also did a subject access via CIFAS and no markers and also my credit file. Luckily I had a back up bank account2

I don't know why anyone would be nervous about this. Cross that bridge if you ever come to it.ratechaser said:

Yes, some banks literally make personalised offers and they even ask you if you'd like to see them. As you can see on Colsten's screenshot, they offer some products specifically to you. I also had an "offer" for overdraft, saver, mortgage, but not for credit card or insurance. When I logged into online account, it said based on your account activity we think you can increase your overdraft up to.... So how is this not personalised? It doesn't mean you have to be "singled out" or that someone has to be sitting there and sending you offers manually. If they didn't want me to increase my OD then why would they encourage me to do so? And pandemics? It's been a year now. Don't tell me they haven't had enough time to adjust their algorithms if they wanted.EPICA - the best symphonic metal band in the world !0 -

Interesting indeed. Have you made any change to anything recently? I mean, OD increase, new account or something?

It was a new account only opened 4 days. I have banked with them a few times before so I'm wondering if that was it. However no OD. I also got the 60 days notice and upon research if it was fraud etc they close account straightaway. My card worked fine and I just guess they think well you've banked with us before and left and come back but were not interested. I can see why people worry about the letters they get as you left feeling like a criminal when your not. I use Nationwide now0
