I'm pretty sure furlough is for employers who can not afford to keep staff whilst partially or fully closed.
Being furloughed for child care is a generous take on the furlough system.
I thought that too. My daughter-in-law has had to take unpaid leave. I thought the furlough scheme was for staff who could not work because the workplace was closed.

Expect a lot more posts like this over the next few weeks & months, a lot of people have got far too comfortable on furlough.
In the future the realisation that furlough wasn't a free hand out either. The bill has yet to be paid.
Still haven't paid  the previous bills from the triple dip and subsequent issues. We won't be paying this one. Future generations not yet born wil be lumped with it.
    Tax day is 23rd March.

Oh I know. What I mean is that we had an eye-watering debt (and a budget deficit) even before all of this. Any increase in tax or "austerity" would first have to get rid of the deficit and the older debt, before we were actually repaying this one.

Except now the gov can blame it all on covid and have less of a public backlash that they otherwise would. I wouldn't expect them to make massive changes just now though. They'll want to make sure the economy is recovering before they do anything which might damage it.

Why a public backlash?  It's reality.

Not unique to the UK either. Biden has some pain to levy as well.

It might be reality. But most voters don't seem to work on that basis and they really don't like any increase of tax unless its on corporations. Which is why they haven't done it until now, when they have an excuse.

Most voters seemed to be under the impression austerity was just something we had to suffer for "a few years" before things would go back to normal. Not realising that we were actually looking at a period of 50 years or more - and that was on the basis that austerity would both get rid of the deficit and start paying back the debt. They haven't even managed to get rid of the deficit yet - something they pledged to do by 2015.

Other than a minor disagreement this morning I am due back on Wednesday.
I counted Saturday as day 1 of isolation as my dad started with a bit of a cough on Friday evening. So that makes today day 10. My plan was to get tested tomorrow morning myself then drive home and return to work Wednesday. But he is adamant I should be in today. He is also asking for my dads test result so that they can keep it on file. Now my Dad isn't a COVID disbeliever but he definitely thinks this whole thing has been blown way out of proportion and we shouldn't have been in multiple lockdowns etc. Even though he himself is classed as vulnerable and he does shield, he still bangs on about the 0.2% death rate etc. I can imagine asking him for a copy of his test result for my work. I can already hear him say "tell him to f*** off!!!!!"

I feel like he is calling me a liar with the way he is trying to trip me up all the time. I'm not stuck here in my dads pub for fun (trust me, that is not as much fun as it sounds lol) and it was my daughters 16th birthday on Saturday and I had to miss that. If I were trying to blag some extra time off work then I am going to some seriously extreme lengths to get time off without pay!

It's a shame your Dad doesn't have anyone living closer who he can form a support bubble with.  I imagine it restricts how often you can visit him if you have to travel 100 miles each time.  Sorry to hear he has tested positive for COVID, I hope he gets better soon.  If he doesn't go out and you are the only person who visits him then, yes, it's likely that you were asymptomatic and passed the virus onto him.

SSP sounds the correct payment as you are not able to be called into work during the self-isolation period.

Unfortunately due to a messy separation and divorce from my mum (this is the second time they have divorced!!) he doesnt really speak with my other brothers and his sisters are all shielding themselves and are in bubbles with the sons/daughters. I have been doing this 244 mile round trip pretty much every weekend for almost a year now.

If your plan is to get tested tomorrow before returning to work you may not have the results in time. I took a test Saturday morning and still waiting for the results.

Happy birthday to your daughter. How old is your youngest? When you said you had to be furloughed to look after the kids I had assumed young kids.

I’ll get a rapid test done tomorrow morning. I’ll have the results in an hour or 2.
