  • Thanks for that.

When you say that a 150 rated will wear one and a half times as well as a 100 rated, does that mean that the 150 will wear faster or slower than the 100? :o

Crazy Chemist are you anywhere near Kidderminster?

My partners just got a really good deal on 4 x Firestone 165/65 15" at Fast Fit Tyres near Morrisons (Dixon Street). £180 fully fitted.

Martins the guy there and very helpful.

I'm about 25 miles from Kidderminster but these Firestones... are they a budget brand?

As far as I am aware Firestones are one of the top brands - but someone may correct me.

My other half is picky and wouldn't go for a cheap brand.

    Thanks :D

I asked Kwik Fit about this and they say that the Treadwear indicator number isn't a measure of how quick the tyre wears, but actually shows the depth of the indicator, so that for example, my tyres have "Treadwear 200", so my tread wear indicator will be at equal depth at 2mm.

I saw a friend's new Aston Martin the other day and his tyres have "Treadwear 280". The treadwear indicator didn't seem to be at 2.8mm from the base!

Can I assume that Kwik-Fit know not what they are talking about, as per usual? :rotfl:

in my opinion, tyres are like oil and fuel - you get what you pay for, and given that tyres are essentially keeping me alive when i'm driving I wouldnt skimp on them, buy a decent make. rubber is cheaper than metal - and crap tyres only get a chance to let you down once...

Anybody any suggestions on best place to go both for quality of service and price?

    Pete,

National Tyres and Autocare have a deal on. (If you have a Tesco Clubcard, get 1 point for every pound spent.) Either buy one get one free on specified sizes of Barum tyre or
Avon Tyres ZV3 (Made in England)
    Buy two for £90 195/65VR15. or 195/50VR1
    Buy two for £150 205/55ZR16, 205/40WR17. 205/50ZR16, etc

    see http://www.national.co.uk/promotions/specials.asp

One of the ads offers call in for free brake inspection.
The staff at my local branch were very efficient and look to have done a good job

  • If you want a cheaper but good tyre - Bridgestone.

If you want the best - Michelin. Simple as that. (no - i'm not just talking about formula 1 - they are totally different).

Alternatively, get the tyre that was recommended for your car. Some cars actually have a tyre designed for them.

Remember they are what hold you to the road - you need tyres that will work very well in all conditions. Very often really good tyres improve the ride significantly.
