LV advised me to leave my insurer out of it to avoid impairment to my claims history.

But you will still have to declare the claim as asked, when renewing your insurance...

"Have you had any claims in the last X years"...

To which the answer is yes... Say no and it is a road to a cancelled insurance policy & a lifetime of very expensive insurance policies on everything, not just motor....

Might not affect you NCD with your current ins co.

Yep, perfectly right.  I've been getting my head around that one too.  Technically I think I am already supposed to have told them.  I need to have that conversation PDQ.  The whole thing is a nightmare.  Sandtree is right about the fight.  I'm afraid I may not have the stomach for it.  A victory would be pyrrhic.  I used to go after those out of principle, regardless.  I haven't needed the car so much during the pandemic.  I'm getting used to it.

OP is that their first offer
Few years ago my van was written off and I bought a replacement straight away then I got a daft offer of £2500 (replacement van same spec £6000) turned that down a day later they upped it £4000.Told them to go away and check the 15 adverts I had emailed them for same van/spec/mileage etc and come back with sensible offer, 2 weeks later had a phone call off Mr Smarmy offering £4400 telling me it was a good offer and as self employed I must be needing the cash for next van. I informed him I had bought replacement van 3 weeks previously and was in no rush for money and if he phoned back with a stupid offer I would hang up. Ten minutes later answered the phone "hello Mr Couriervanman how does £4600" I hung up before he finished the sentence. Eventually he got the message and offered £6000 paid into my account within 30 minutes......OP just find as many adverts for your car with same spec/mileage/condition and don't budge
I think you handled the whole thing better than I did.  I just let myself get walked over now that I look back on it.  Lots of helpful souls here are finding cars for me on eBay and Autotrader and so on. I appreciate that.   I have looked at a lot of those cars and travelled to see some of them.  That's how I eventually realised I had been stiffed.   I want a similar car to the one I had, or as near as dammit, and I want a credible warranty.  That is out there.  But not for the money LV gave me.
Did you have a warranty on your car? Buy another 13 year old motor and I doubt any warranty will be worth the paper it's written on.

Thats the trouble with running an old car and paying over the odds for a main dealer history.
If its a warranty from a junk yard I agree.  I didn't pay over the odds for a main dealer history.  Its not the history that matters, its the maintenance.  VW took good care of it.  The car ran perfectly.  Every year I had a budget of about 1000 pounds.  That covered service and occasional parts replacement.  Good economics I say.  If the car had not been written off that situation would have lasted indefinitely.  My neighbour has a fifty year old car.  My daughter has a Triumph Herald.   I liked the car and I liked not being so in thrall to a throw-away society.   Take the !!!!!! all you want.  I planned to grow old with that damn car.
Completely understand your strategy with the car, mine is the same, 2001 Golf. I have no intention of changing and would really struggle to find one with the same history and condition for the sort of money I'm likely to be offered if it were written off. Hopefully you strike lucky and find one that is comparable
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

You may only need to tell them on renewal, but then again if it's a total loss what have you been insuring since the accident?

Just looked on auto trader 2006 to 2008 diesel Eos, with the exception of one at 2499 with a broken roof (it's never going to sell) all of the cars with more than 100000 miles are priced below £2000. The problem you have is there is no evidence your car is worth more than that. Add in that those are asking prices not the actual sale price.

The majority of the buying public do not like high mileage and 100000 is a psychological tipping point. Your car has 150000 so to the majority of the buying public it is only fit for scrapping.

Don't take it the wrong way I take the same approach to car ownership as you. Both my cars are over 10 years old one over 15. Both have full service history one still main dealer. I am under no illusion that I would ever be able to replace either using the pay out from the insurer if they were written off.
  • Wonder what wbac value it at.

What have I been insuring?  Nothing.  I am not particularly interested in buying what's out there for 1800 quid.  To replace mine from an outlet that I would feel comfortable with and a car with a plausible service history is going to take about 3500.  I haven't got round to that yet.

They tended to be between 300 and 500.  When the cambelt comes due, for example,  you brace yourself.  But you have plenty of years when the car doesn't cost much more than the minor service interval, consumables and the fixed costs.  It was a fun car in the summer.  If you haven't had a convertible you get the wrong impression of them.  On hot days you need the roof up.  I learned that early on.  Sunstroke.  They are for those occasions when you are on country roads and as it happens that was a lot of my driving.
