Air source/Heat Pump operation help

Now you've got the 'gist' of how it works, have another read through the installer manual - it will likely make a bit more sense now?

Just an update, after lots of tweaking...
Target is now set to 50c, we’re no longer using any comfort and Eco mode is set from 1800-0900 overnight every day.Although its actually on Eco for 14 hours, which is more than before (most of the heating was done previously with comfort mode) our electricity usage has dropped slightly!!Even with the freezing weather and snow recently, we’ve noticed no difference in the temp of the hot water and we have enough hot water for 2 showers in the morning, and then throughout the day. Thanks for your help.1 -
I have a Worcester Bosch Greenstar heatpump Air to water 9.5kw that is 12 years old. In the morning I find that the system has switched on the immersion and both hot water and heating temps are the same in the upper 30’s. I can leave it like this for hours and both figures hardly budge. The immersion is on continuous sapping my electricity bill. When I switch the machine off it first concentrates on raising the hot water temp then the heating flow temp. I have had WB come out 3 times. They said there was no refrigerant leak but it was a faulty expansion valve. This was repaired three weeks ago. Now the temp outside is -2 the problem has manifested again. I’m loathed to call the engineers out again as it has already cost me a fortune....or maybe I have no choice? Is there something I can look at myself?
Many thanks.
Tim

The first thing I would do is disable the immersion heater to see what happens. It's not easy to try and diagnose a fault remotely without really knowing how it works.
I had a problem with mine over Christmas but fortunately the diagnostic error codes pointed me towards the flow switch, so I pulled it out cleaned it and it's been ok since.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
Thank you matelodave, not sure how on Earth I can disable the immersion heater as it is not listed in my instructions. I should say that although the hot water temp and the flow temp reads 39 degrees....when I fill a mug with hot water it is way above that figure! Scratching my head as to why the immersion comes on when the hot water is already much hotter than it states!0

I believe it’s a Worcester Bosch Greensource 9.5kw air to water heat pump....(Worcester HWDU-151 4.5kw 1 x 230. I have the user manual but can’t find this information anywhere. Thank again for your valued input.0

If you do a search on your heatpump you can download the installation and commissioning manuals but the controls appear to be quite complex. (more so than my Daikin). However having a look at the Customer manual (also available to download if you dont have it) you can get into an advanced user menu by pressing the button for five seconds which may help you do a bit of fault finding. have a look at the fault menu to see if it's flagging up an expansion valve problem.
Dont change any settings unless you note down what they were before you change them, don't adjust more than one at a time and always give the heat pump at least 24 hours or more to let it settle down before checking the effect or having another tweak.
I can easily disable my immersion heater either by using the controller or just isolating it. My unit has an immersion in the hot water tank and a 6kw backup-heater in the hydrobox and they have each have a separate isolating switch so they can be shut off without affecting the operation of the heat pump.
TBH I'd only be happy having a fiddle if I'd spent sometime understanding how it all worked. I know how mine does, as I've had it ten years and done quite a bit of my own tweaking but I wouldn't advise anyone else to get into the commissioning menu's without understanding what they are doing.
Sorry but it really does look like you've got to get WB in to sort it out unless there's a WB expert on the forum who could advise you.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
Thanks matelodave, solid and very good advice. I agree with all you’ve said. I’m have to confess that I’ve owned my heat pump for 12 years and never fully understood the machine. That said......I’m going to have another go and look into the engineers menu and see if I can detect any faults myself. If I can’t I may just have to bite the bullet and call WB. The problem I have with this is that they’ll come on a nice mild day and everything will be working ‘hunky dorey’. Even all their testing and temperatures will prove to be functioning normal. This is such a strange anomaly that I can’t figure out and so it would seem some WB engineers can’t either! Thanks again very much appreciate your comments.👍0
