Hi, I spoke to eon on Saturday to submit a meter reading (last one was in may 2020) up until that point in may we were paying £96 a month for gas and electric. Unbeknown to me I had been overpaying and was £250 in credit and they reduced my bill to £36 a month. On Saturday they told me that I’ve been underpaying now and that my account was £2800 in debt!! After I’d picked my jaw up they told me to take a meter reading every day for a week to see how much we are using.

The last 2 days we’ve used 18m3 of gas on Saturday and 19m3 on Sunday! I turned the boiler off for an hour and the meter didn’t move so that’s ruled out any leaks! I have no idea what that equates to in KWs?

My wife is at home full time looking after our 2 year old. We have the heating set to 16 over night and 20 during the day

Our home is a recently fully refurbished 5 bed dormer bungalow with 6inchs of kingspan in the roof space. It’s had a full new heating system fitted with 14 rads and 4 towel rads, the boiler is a Worcester Bosch 40cdi with unvented
 cylinder (300l tank)

Does anyone have any idea as to why the usage is so high?

Multiply the m3 by 11.2 to get kWh. So 18 m3 is about 200 kWh and at 3p is £6

    What about the electric ?

Give us your readings from May 2020 and today please. When reading watch out for the decimal point and ignore all numbers after the decimal point.

£2800 in 9 months suggests wrong meter reads to me.

Unfortunately the answers are in the BIBs.
Bungalows are expensive because of the greater area, and big properties with umpteen radiators will never be cheap to heat.  About the only BIB you can change is E.On; they won't be the cheapest provider.  Using Citizens Advice and 'Which? Switch', start comparing the cost of your annual kWh usage derived from actual meter readings.
Remember that separate suppliers are often cheaper than dual fuel.

Also WOW - electric is £10 (edit - corrected £2.50 ) / day - no wonder you owe so much,
You really have taken your eye off the ball by not reading your meters.

Silly question: how did you read the gas meter?  Read the meter on the wall and make sure the reading shown is m3, not kWh.

FWIW, the reading of 14538 m3 works out at a yearly average of less than 11,000 kWh which is slightly lower than the typical domestic consumption.
However, the past consumption may have been lower, especially if if the property has been enlarged, refurbed etc.

We bought it as a 2 bed bungalow. We’ve put a large extension to the rear and used all the existing loft space and the extension loft for living space. Its gone from 86m2 to roughly 300m2
  • It's winter, sub-zero temperatures outside and it's a large property - gas consumption looks ok. Electricity consumption seems high - any underfloor heating or halogen lightbulbs?
