You could try some panel wipes available from H******rds, try on a small section first. If using a clay bar, ensure you use plenty of lubricant and be gentle. But, a big but, if while using a clay bar it drops to the ground bin it straightaway.
Good advice but she could put something clean on the ground underneath the area being worked on in case she drops the clay bar.

A clean towel or a plastic sheet perhaps.

Or does that also risk contamination that will scratch the paint?

A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

I rather suspect the OP knows exactly who did it.
we don't have a clue, sorry, not sure why you think we would..if only we DID know!
That's a tag done just for the sake of it rather than any other kind of message.
Was yours the only car or property targeted?
I didn't know those things sent messages. To answer you, our car was the only one. They sprayed something on a garden wall in a different colour, adjacent to the car, but it wasn't like the stuff they sprayed on the car. Was just an expletive etc...
A tag isn't a message aimed at you. It's purely someone writing their name for fun so it wasn't personal.

If the spray paint said something like Cheater it would probably be a targeted message.

I don't imagine it will keep happening. Your car probably was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Could be worse, Alan Partridge had to do a temporary 'fix' to make his car decent

If the car has been waxed/polished on a regular basis you could try something like Meguires ultimate compound. This can be used with hand polishing or with a machine. I had something similar on my car although not as bad and it removed all traces, took some work mind.

As has been stated a good detailer should fix this all day long.
Painting would be a bad choice unless absolutely necessary and I would highly doubt it.

Dumb thing to do that is, obviously is the ex who will shortly get a visit from the old Bill for criminal damage and an invoice for the repairs from the owner, they say revenge is a dish best served cold, but perhaps it would be more mature to simply move on rather than get yourself a conviction and large bill.

Which, in the absence of witnesses, or a video clearly showing their face whilst they are holding a placard with their full name & address they will simply laugh at and deny.
There is very very very little chance of the Police doing anything about it :(

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

Sorry to hear about the vandalism. Regarding removal, a blade should be able to remove the paint from the window. If there are any scratches afterward, use a glass polish.

Regarding the door, you may be able to use a strong cutting compound and a car polisher to remove the paint. Failing that, a bodyshop should sort the door for less than £200.

Since when has criminal damage been a civil matter?

Rule of thumb with a clay bar slipping out of your hands onto anything other than the cars surface.. is bin it. It seems extreme but the clay is designed to pick up anything that is attached to the bodywork/glass, anything else on the clay could cause scratching to the paintwork, generally I tend to split the clay into 2 pieces, nothing worse than having done half a car and not having enough to do the other half if you drop it!
