Interesting on the "Can't have any other accounts" when you have a HSBC basic account. As I have one, yet have 3 other current accounts... Which I have previously moved money between.
Must admit it has had nothing in it for the last year. But the offer of a FREE £15 for login into internet/mobile banking was too good to miss.Life in the slow lane1 -

in my banking life I have had 3 different banks attempt to make a single withdrawal multiple times, so it is far from uncommon, ... and in my experience it only happened when humans were involved!
Surely they can’t take the money away from me? is that legal?Of course it isn't legal, why would it be ?This is where you need to complain about whats happened.

Must admit it has had nothing in it for the last year. But the offer of a FREE £15 for login into internet/mobile banking was too good to miss. The only reason I knew about the 'only account' rule was I that fell foul of it a little while ago.
I opened a HSBC Basic Account way back in 2007, purely so I could tip my accumulated coinage into their coin counting machine, as they were the only bank in local town to have one.
When I opened the account, there was no such rule about it being the only account one could have, and when I explained to the lady in the branch what I wanted it for, she suggested the basic account.
However, over time the rules/t&c’s have changed.
When I went in a year or so back, I was having problems with the coin counter and the staff member came over to help. Whilst helping, she tried to flog me a new account, but I said no I was happy with the basic account, purely to get rid of my excess change, then transfer it to my main bank.
She pointed out the then new condition about a HSBC Basic account must be the only account one holds. She also said HSBC were trying to ‘weed out’ old Basic accounts which were not being used for the purpose they are now assigned, or where the customer has accounts at other banks.
It was easily solved, as within a couple of key presses she upgraded my ‘basic’ account to being a proper ‘current’ account (with no hard credit search). I have continued to use it for exactly the same purpose to this day!

Have I got this right? You had an inheritance paid into your HSBC account which you then transferred to your new account presumably with a different bank? HSBC or you either transferred it twice (how was it transferred?) leaving the account overdrawn so they then asked for it back from your new bank but because you (or HSBC?) closed the account it cannot be paid in so they will send you a cheque?
This seems to be a monumental mess from start to finish and yes I would complain unless the erroneous transfer which took it overdrawn was your fault. They must be able to see the trail of transactions and I am not sure what a TSN number is but assume you can no longer gain access to the account online? Escalate the complaint and say it is unacceptable you have to wait 30 days for it to be returned. Have you checked why your new bank returned it in the first place? That does not seem correct either to do that without checking with you first if you were the one instigating the transfer.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free Wannabe, Budgeting and Banking and Savings and Investment boards. I think what has happened is the money has come in, and then been transferred. The bank suspected something (AML etc), recalled the funds from the other bank, and put in a "negative debit" so that when the money was returned it couldn't be spent. They've now done their investigations, and decided that its not fraudulent, but in any case don't want the business, so will now close the account and post a cheque at their own convenience rather than just transfer the money back). I guess they get to hold it for 30 days that way.Peter
