Ive just been quoted £90 for full service. All parts are included . Is that a good price?
It's too cheap. It's probably not much more than oil and filter. £7 for an oil filter. £20 for oil. £10 for a fuel filter. £20 for four plugs. £15 for an air filter. That's over £70 in parts alone... When was the alt belt done? When was the coolant changed? When was the cambelt done?

That sounds far too cheap. Major service on this neglected car should be at a minimum.
    Air filter
    Oil filter
    Oil
    Cabin filter
    4 x spark plugs
    Brake fluid
So DIY I would be looking at £50 to £60 using the cheapest parts from euro car parts.

So is this mechanic suggesting he can do 2 to 3 hours work for £30 all in. Corners will be cut. Alternatively you have miss understood and he is offering a minor service which would be oil and oil filter plus air filter only. So around £30 parts and £60 labour which is about right for an independent garage minor service.

Should i do a minor or major service? I wad just reading online.
Find a good local independent garage, tell them the car has not been serviced for X years & can they do one and give it a full check over.
Be prepared for a large bill....

Sadly missing services is a road to bigger bills.

I normally get breaks etc done before MOT.
What exactly are they quoting as a "full service"? That price sounds like just an oil and filter change. Obviously that's important but how long since last service, 5 years? If so there are other things that would be worth doing too

The last big (full) service we had done was in the region of £280, by a local non dealer garage.
Just dug out the invoice - £85 labour and £147 for parts, plus VAT

How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

£85+vat labour is probably an hour and a half to two hours, depending on where you are. That'd be about right.

    Where/Who?

    That sounds way to cheap.
What parts are they quoting for?

TBH. At that price I would be expecting a call to say that you need XY&Z replacing & the bill is going to be several hundreds more.

Just done a quick check & Kwik Fit want £86 for a basic oil & filter change. They would not be my choice for anything..

£86 is the loss leader price so they can get you on a ramp to tell you you will need new pads and discs, 2 new tyres and your rear shocks are weeping oil.

Aint no loss leader it's a rip off.....
5 ltr oil £20, filter £5. Less than 30 mins to change both.....

The cost of their oil & filter change over 3 years is the same as I payed for my 3 year service deal.... :)

  • My local indie charges £49.50 an hour labour (+VAT) which is fairly typical, so you're not going to get much for £90 if it includes parts. In your other post you stated that your car hadn't been serviced for three and a half years. It needs much more than £90 spent on it, imho.

You're assuming that a service is only oil& filter change and nothing else. Maybe that is it in some places but the official minor service for many vehicles includes a lot more than just those items. Not other parts to change but many items to check
