  • when I did my test we used good old 20/50 , brake shoes you could die for (asbestos) , non of them new fangled pad things and spark plug wires that were string covered in graphite

ah the good old days , I remember 4 gallon of petrol for £1 (actually thats before I passed my test)

Should i do a minor or major service? I wad just reading online.
  • a minor service will cover oil and filter , as yours has not been serviced for many miles/years , it may need air filter , spark plugs and if belt driven a new belt

just find a local garage and explain your problem , dont go to the likes of main dealers or halfrauds , because they will charge you for draining , flushing and refilling washer bottle , and you will smile

..major...as you will want them to check brake pads/discs, and you may want them to change the brake fluid as well?

....what!!! ...having a car serviced IMPROVES improves economy!!!???...well you learn something every

Changing spark plugs etc changing oil i haven't.  If the oil light comes on i just fill it up. Othet than that  never got it changed ever.
Here you go, something to get you started assuming it is the 1.6 VW engine not 1.5 originally mentioned. Cost of the parts for oil/filter & air filter should be around £30 if you DIY.

Oh thanks wheres the best place to get these parts from ?
Put your reg in here and they'll show you the parts and if there is a local store. Alternatively have a look on Google for local auto parts store that will be able to supply you

    WOAH!

That's not a "low level" light. It's telling you there's no oil pressure. If that's because the level's low, then it's because it's trying to pump fresh air around your engine instead of oil... And engines REALLY don't like that.

Not necessarily, some Golfs have a low level indicator warning.

Find a good local independent garage, tell them the car has not been serviced for X years & can they do one and give it a full check over.
Be prepared for a large bill....

Sadly missing services is a road to bigger bills.

Ive just been quoted £90 for full service. All parts are included . Is that a good price?
I normally get breaks etc done before MOT.

I think that's reasonable, I paid a little less for a 'minor service' at my regular indie garage. They aren't the cheapest(still cheaper than Kwik fit) but decent standard of service, reliable and been using them for nearly 10 years.
