Unilever shares

People have no qualms in buying Orsted at a p/e ratios of 44 or Vestas Wind at 72 respectively.Alexland said:Good article in AJ Bell Shares Magazine - an "expensive defensive"?
Unilever ranks in the top 100 ESG companies globally. Extremely committed not just internally but throughout it's entire supply chain.2 -
Cheers, that was an interesting readAlexland said:Good article in AJ Bell Shares Magazine - an "expensive defensive"?
I was tempted to pull the trigger and buy some, that's just increased temptation!0 -
In my opinion I honestly don’t think that is the reason. Plant based food/vegan is on the rise around the world and sales are going up. As far as high end beauty products then companies such as Estee Lauder etc seem to always do reasonably well for the more affluent end of society.j.p said:Why Unilever fell?
Maybe because investors don't like the sound of "focusing on faster growing areas including high-end beauty and plant-based foods". I don't.

I like ULVR, glad they exist, but am not about to start my own individual share portfolio again. I have done that in the past both individually and within a share club over a decade ago and we didn't outperform the market. I am happy owning ULVR both within our trackers and Murray Income MUT which works on scale with leverage and discount to provide a higher smoothed income and better sector diversification than I could achieve on my own. Will an above average quality UK investment trust outperform a global tracker? Who knows, maybe not but it's a better value market and the growing dividends are reassuring as a backup ISA income so that's worth something to me. It's not always about building a big pile of money (already got that in the pensions) but about how the various investments fit into your life plan.ChilliBob said:I was tempted to pull the trigger and buy some, that's just increased temptation!

I don't own any shares so this would be the first dip. I'm still on the fence though and thinking perhaps I'm better sticking to funds and breaking into ITs. Very tempted by the new positive change BG IT. For exsmple. I realise that's totally off topic of the thread now though so I'll stop!

I have just entered into Unilever today - 4% dividend yield on one of the most solid stocks in the world is far too good to miss!0

The share price has started to rise with a gain of 1.5% today. Hopefully, the tide will turn.Adyinvestment said:I have just entered into Unilever today - 4% dividend yield on one of the most solid stocks in the world is far too good to miss!0 -

These type of share price fluctuations (of 1.5%) occur on a daily basis so I really wouldn’t take any notice of any one day swings in either direction. It’s the long term price that matters and I personally think ULVR will do reasonably well.Sally57 said:

ULVR shares down nearly 6% today on news of increasing commodity, packaging and transport costs. Not entirely unexpected and likely to be affecting their competitors too. In the short term they confirmed this will hit margins but are their brands and retailer relationships strong enough to push price increases on to the consumer? The share price is back at an attractive level today but I have been eating a pot of Lidl fake Ben & Jerrys over recent days and concluded it's probably a better product. Looking at the performance since this thread was last active I am glad we went with Murray Income MUT for quality income rather than owning ULVR directly.

Underlying sales growth of 5% didn't offset the sentiment created by the margin hit. My view is that they'll continue to generate good amounts of cash and be a reasonable long-term hold assuming dividends don't get hit too hard. Solid foundations for their new product developments.
*I got in at £38.50 in Feb 2018 and, including dividends, at current price up c. 17%1
