  • I paid for a service. That service wasn't provided.
If I had known that service wouldn't be provided then I would have not paid.

    But, to quote Twain,

“Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.”

    So have fun trolling.

Ah, another one who can't understand the concept of hindsight but has come along to put his ignorant boot in anyway.  Kick away if you must, it saves any logical thinking.

Nice quote btw, which works both ways of course, though I prefer GBS's "The reasonable man adapts himself to the world:  the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.  Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man"

I think I'll just leave it at that.
As CJ might have said to Reggie Perrin "I didn't get where I am today by wasting time on the internet"  ;)

What?  A simple piece of news making you poorer?   That's a great trick don't you think?
Yes, you'd be down the cost of the policy without any cover. If I hadn't bought insurance I'd have the money in the bank and no cover.
  • Its an interesting issue, my view is that the examples cited in this thread are flawed (no offence intended) as an insurance policy that wouldn't pay out means that you didn't get the fundamental thing that you paid for.
With the VW issue everyone still got the cars they paid for and if it hadn't come to light no one would have been any the wiser so no one has suffered a quantifiable loss and that is was compenstation is based on. Its not like the cars had less doors than they should have or were the wrong size, didn't work or broke down more often.
The only loser in this is the enviroment which has been poluted with more emmisions. I seems to me that the best way to deal with this is for the government of each country to estimate how much polution has been and will be generated and how this can be offset and then fine VW the amount it will cost to impliment measures to offset this (i.e. wind farms, solar panels etc.).
Just my 10p, it will be interesting to see how any court case get on.

Of coarse there was a loss with PPI, the premiums that people paid monthly for the policy. If the policy could never be used then they have still paid for it. That is what was claimed back (+ interest).
True, but they didn't know that.  People buy insurance for peace-of-mind and that's what a PPI policy provided to someone as long as they never needed to claim.

Suppose your house insurance policy for last year was not valid and would never have paid out in the event of a claim?  You paid your premium and lived happily ever after with peace of mind, which is why we all buy insurance.  Because you never needed to claim you never knew the policy was useless so your peace of mind was not disturbed.  You lost nothing.

I lost the money I paid for a service I didn't and couldn't receive. It's really not hard to understand. I paid for a service, that service wasn't and couldn't have been provided. I lost that money.
Nobody buys insurance expecting to make a claim (unless fraud is involved).  So yes, you 'lose' money on every insurance policy you don't claim against.  You 'lose' the premium.  But you HOPE to lose that premium.  You pay it willingly in the hope that you'll never need to claim.  You've bought peace of mind and if you don't make a claim then that peace of mind is not shattered and you are happy to have 'lost' the premium.  In fact you're so happy about 'losing' your premium that you immediately pay AGAIN to renew the policy.  In practice you've lost nothing.  It's really not hard to understand.
I bought motor insurance as if I don't I will get a fine.

Home insurance - building and contents, optional, but being on flat ground, a flood you never know, so yes piece of mind , I hope they pay when it happens.

Life/payment protection/critical cover - nope, don't trust them to pay out.

  • I own an affected VW and I am interested in how this pans out-
The update for uk cars is hit and miss with many having problems .
My VW engineer advised against the update and did explain that until VW are willing to pay for anything that goes wrong after the update it’s not worth the risk.
Problems people owning affected cars will be resell value how much this changes the value i could not say but If was buying a second hand car that has one of the engines I would be concerned.
Maybe it’s been updated and having a problem that is hidden ?
also you have to be carful what garages you take it to as if it goes to a main dealer garage you may find the update done automatically….

I would be happy with a nice discount on a new VW but if a chunk of cash is what they do in the end that’s all good 👍
