EON are charging me £90 a month for electricity, that seems insanely high to me?

Have you actually used a comparison tool or are you looking on random utility suppliers websites. There is NO WAY bulb is the only cheapest supplier for you. There will be a fair few suppliers cheaper than bulb.

    Have you tried https://energycompare.citizensadvice.org.uk/
Remember when using these, try a search first saying you have an economy 7 meter. (to give econ 7 rates) and then saying you don't have one (to give a flat rate tariff) and see what is cheaper.
Using that site the only one cheaper than Bulb is Nabuh Energy whoever they are, and they have awful reviews so I wouldn't go with them.
I find it surprising that there is only one company cheaper than bulb. Which part of the country are you in? What annual consumption level are you putting in? Are you looking at gas and electricity separately or choosing "duel fuel".

For example, looking in the london region, with an estimate of 9000kwh a year electricity usage the following tariffs come up:
    symbio: SC17p, Unit rate:13.4p
    neo: SC21p Unit rate 13.5p
Neon reef: SC13.28p Unit rate 14.055p
    Green: SC12p Unit rate 15.35p
    (bulb are SC20.31p unit 16.5p)

I know prices vary by region and sometimes by use, but i'd be astounded if bulb are the cheapest for you. They used to be very competitive but not in the last couple of years.

It cost me £13 to ring them last time as I was on hold for over 2 hours, and I'll have to phone them again tomorrow, they're an absolute nightmare of a company to get in touch with
You may be able to reach them on an 0800 number. Possibly 0800 0510760. Worth a try.
  • I have the same problem. A 50% increase in cost one month over previous. They told me they had changed me to a variable tariff. I I looked ‘online for their best deal’ which turned out even more expensive. I will be looking elsewhere.

I think there's more to it than that - possibly a meter read has resulted in a catch up adjustment of the DD.

@Whackett - some consumption, tariff and DD details please.

In that case is it that the DD you have been paying has not been enough for your bills,  Details of your annual consumption in kWh's, tariff and DD please .

My son lives in a 2 bedroomed flat.  He only uses one bedroom and everything is electrical.  He has been on a variable tariff since last September and advised to set up dd for £47 per month.  He naively didn't realise that he needed to submit readings each month (his first job since uni when all bills were included in his rent)  His meter is in the basement of the block of flats and he has asked the caretaker to get his reading.  It appears he has used a ridiculous amount. We live in a detached house with 4 of us and do not use this much.  I have just looked at his bill and it says
    E.ON EnergyPlan Usage charges £443.59 20
     Feb 2021 to 01 Apr 2021 Normal units used 2817 at 15.747p each £443.59
    Standing charges £10.14 20 Feb 2021 to 31 Mar 2021 40 days at 25.353p £10.14
    Usage charges £488.88 01 Apr 2021 to 11 May 2021 Normal units used 2815 at 17.367p each £488.88
    Standing charges £10.22 01 Apr 2021 to 10 May 2021 40 days at 25.556p £10.22 I
Total electricity charges (excluding any discounts and VAT) £952.83
I do not know how he could possibly have used so much when he goes to work during the day - granted he has worked from home in lockdown, but from April to May has not been in during the day.  I have spoken to Eon, just feel like they are not helpful at all. Can anyone point me in the right direction - he is now owing £1,400 despite paying his £47 per month.

He has just sent me his readings from 11 May to 1 June and that is showing that in that time he has used 245 units.so in 21 days this amount yet his previous amount is 2817 units for 40 days in Feb to April and 2815 units for 40 days from April to May

Is he 100% sure that he is reading the correct meter -  check the serial number on the bill with that on the bill. Also prove by switching off at the meter position that he looses all supplies to his flat.

What heating has he been using Feb to April and April to May - and what is the heating ?
