As of now the desktop has been switched on for about 7 hours, mostly in sleep mode, which is roughly how I use it daily for the last 7 years, and it is working as I would expect it to and as it has done for 7 years.
    So it's working normally now?

I might have missed it, but what speed are you getting? Have you tried switching off your router then back on again after 30 seconds?
How would I check the speed?

Haven't tried sitching router on and ofwf, would this help?

Am using desktop via Wi-Fi, I could move the router to side of desktop and use cable if you think that might help?

    Type speed test into google
Switching off and on your router might help, did for my wifi not that long ago.

Perhaps it is just me who wonders why you have a thirteen year old CPU in a seven year old PC. Maybe it's older than you think and it's time for an internal cleaning.

Computer bought second hand, I was told 2-3 years old at time.

Also, you may have AVG installed but when was the last time you actually ran a full scan? Also, have you tried running a malware scan?

I'd recommend getting and running Adwcleaner followed by a full scan using Malwarebytes.
Have just run AVG, (last scan 2 days ago),showing no malware but is showing "2 advanced issues found", 209 sensitive items are prime targets for attack, & You're vulnerable to fake websites. However to resolve they want payment.

Dial-up? Do you mean ADSL (or ADSL2+)? Those speeds suggest a copper line connected as ADSL2+ (up to 24Mbps down and up to 1.3Mbps up) ... so whilst they're poor by most people's standards (those used to fibre), they're not bad for ADSL2+ and shouldn't be the cause of the problems the OP is complaining about.
