Remove AVG and see if that helps .
    And leave no protection?

disconnect from the internet to try it without AVG
But it is the internet that I am having problems with.

Your posts didn't say anything regarding the internet causing the issues.

Has it had the SSD and more memory treatment yet?

If I knew what that meant I could answer, but at a guess I would say no.

    .

Back up if you have not done one.

As said if the disc is having issues then checking that is worth doing
Task manager may give some clues if there are processes causing problems

    model number will be useful
What specs for the rest of the system in particular the RAM and  storage.

The SSD is a much faster storage option and relatively cheap now, more memory can help as well depending what you use the computer for.

Any reason not to be looking at windows 10?
This could be a good time to give the computer a full service.

    8.0 GB (7.87 GB usable)
    don't know re storage.
Model number of what and where to find?

Just use computer for general, no gaming or downloading films etc, very little catch up TV.

I only use it when connected to the internet, so I doubt it would occur if not as it would not be being used.

It has been switched on for 3 hours today and no problems up to now, although most of the time in sleep mode

You told us your computer is slow to respond in general not just your browser, that doesn't suggest it's anything to do with your internet connection.

I honestly think your computer could do with a spring clean and the best way to do this is with a clean install of the OS, and whilst at it there's no reason not to move to Windows 10 and install an SSD while you're at it.

But in the meantime, follow the advice and uninstall AVG, use Windows Security if you have to. What other things have you got running in the background?

According to my computer I have 220GB used on my HDD. Is this what I would have to back up?
I do not have anything like this amount as external storage.
So I would need to buy an external HDD or SSD?

I don't think I mentioned "in general", but I never use it not connected to the internet, so whatever the problem is I doubt it would be replicated by disconnecting as I would not have any way of testing it.

No need to buy an external drive for now. Replace your existing HDD with a 500Gb SSD (tbh a 250Gb one would be fine) and use the HDD for storage or a backup drive.

If I uninstall AVG and disconnect from the internet how would I know if the computer runs slow as I would not be using it?
Whilst I could uninstall AVG from control panel,I do not know re Windows Security, why can I not just uninstall from "programmes and Features in Control; Panel?
I do not know what is running in the back ground.
