I knew it was starting to tailgate me, and kept a decent gap in front for safety. I normally get out of the way of tailgaters if very close as they compromise my safety, of course.

He's just being argumentative because you implied you hadn't seen the van at all. You were rear ended, so it doesn't actually matter.

A van that was very visible, was behind him, and he claims he knew was tailgating him... and then hit the side of his bumper while overtaking... which he couldn't possibly have seen.

If you can't see the potential for the van driver to claim that Banana tried to "close the door" and stop him passing, then your observation is on a par with his.

Thanks, I’ll ignore his nonsense. I will be getting a rear view attachment for my dash cam though.
