Matching paint

Options
I have some dings on my rear bumper, in part where a tail gating numpty hit me while overtaking on a motorway. I can repair the damage easily with filler and sanding. I can easily paint it. But would I be able to get a decent colour match? It is a VW metallic silver on a three year old car.

My past experience with two touch up paints from Halfords for two cars is that the paints weren’t even a close match.

You're going to have a nightmare time getting the paint colour just right due to fading, and it being metallic makes it worse.
It'd be a lot easier to repaint the entire bumper then you've got a panel gap to hide the worst of the match.
Halfords will give you a tin of spray that matches the factory colour, and a suitable primer, if you want to go down that route. I've done it for minor bits of trim before and it seemed to be a decent enough match.
If you want a good match, then I'd ask your local independent bodyshop, it may not be as expensive as you think.
  • Okay thanks, I’ll leave it. Someone might run into me and their insurance can pay, otherwise it’s not worth the expense.

On a 3 year old car?

I think he may have replied to the wrong post.

Possibly it was in reference to this:

No, I had the right post.

I would have thought a three year old car was worth repainting.

Maybe, but I intend to keep it till it dies, and for me it’s a mode of transport. Problem is a repair would keep it off the road for many days as each coat of paint is applied, at least I assume that is true.

    You assume wrong.
