Mine's a 140 but have followed some of the 180 bitdi travails. Darkside developments on utube have some useful info.... Do you have a local TPS? They're trade only but I've always been able to buy all of my spares (van & cars) from them since the day they started but you need to know exactly what you want and not go in for a chat about stuff. The savings have been sizeable!
Have you been given a price for a short engine?
Funnily, i've been pondering a small Caddy sized van to facilitate a side project i'm going to work on. I havent seen much movement yet, but in theory markets like pickups and vans are likely to be hit by the upcoming downturn.
Would be interesting to hear if anyone has direct experience?

Why? So you can argue with them?

with a 8 yr old vechile you have no chance with the manufacturer. has it been regularly serviced using the correct grade of oil. grade of oil is very important with turbo engines, as the turbo is oil cooled. use the wrong oil, and bye bye turbo.

I've spoken to Darkside and a few other places but for some reason a brand new engine from VW was the cheapest option as it comes complete with latest rev d egr cooler and new injectors. Engine builders were quoting similar prices but were not supplying coolers or injectors but they were demanding new ones fitted to warranty the engine.

The only hope i had with VW was if they had admitted there was an issue with the original manufacturing, I mean clearly there is as only a halfwit would use aluminium to build and egr cooler but they are robustly denying any fault. Servicing has been done correctly mostly by VW apart from the last 2. The turbos are not the issue although they could have been ruined when the engine went pop

sorry. I thought it was the turbo was the issue. the engine itself is a different ball game.

Because the average vehicle goes to the crusher at about 14 years of age. Yours will be at least 12 years old before you've cleared the finance, so getting near to that point. Was it your intention to keep it until it's scrap?
If the repair cost is £8K, it's reached the end of it's economic life now, at 8 years.

I don't think the mfr will owe anything. 8 years and 100k miles is a decent run.
But the dealer might? If they knew or should have known that the engine failure was likely to occur.

Most high performance cars have aluminium coolers.it is a very good material for dissipating heat, that in itself is not a problem but there is obviously an issue with that particular model of cooler.

If they won't stump up for a goodwill payment then your only option will be to make a court claim but you are going to need very expensive expert witnesses to support your claim

These vehicles don't tend to be scraped at 14 years old though, the value is somewhere about £20k currently (with a working engine obviously) the residuals were the only reason I was prepared to spend so much on a vehicle of this age. The plan was to keep 3 or 4 years then trade in for a newer one but one the engine has been replaced we will probably keep it longer

I have no intention of taking VW to court, I asked if there was a goodwill jesters, there is not. I'm waiting on the vehicle inspectors to get back to me as to whether they could identify when the cooler started to breakdown, if they cannot I will be left with nearly 6k to find but if they can then hopefully less
