Dead engine help

Options
Hi all, the engine on my car has just gone pop due to the egr cooler breaking up, this appears to be a fault the manufacturer is aware of but are washing their hands of it. It is 8 years old with just under 100k on the clock serviced on time before I got it and kept up to date once in my ownership. I've only had it just over a year and i purchased with a 5 year finance. Obviously the dealer has no part to play as it was over a year ago but would I have any luck asking the finance company to contribute? The bill to repair could be upto 8k if the turbos are ruined too. Or do I have any other options?

Is this a reasonable fault to experience on an 8yo, 100k mile car?

You're going to be very hard pushed to prove it isn't.

£8k "repair"? Perhaps with a brand spankin' engine at dealer prices. But what about with a used engine out of a scrap car? Look at Copart for similar cars with collision damage other than a hard front-ender.
  • No its not a reasonable fault, there is a class action forming against the manufacturer currently over this issue

Woo. Anybody can start a class action for anything. Winning the case is another question entirely... The only winners out of most class actions are the lawyers who get paid either way.

Even then, is the vendor of a 7yo car responsible? Or is the manufacturer?

Why do you think the finance company would contribute? No chance.  Unless by contribute you mean lend you more money and increase your monthly payments.

Taking out 5 years of finance on a 8 year old car was a very silly.  It'll be 13 years old when it's paid off - the average age of a scrapped car.

With a main dealer service history you will always get goodwill where they fix everything for free.
  • So what other options do I have?

A used engine would be no good as it would have the same issue, I wasn't aware of any of this before I got it otherwise I would have looked for either a different car. Busily the egr cooler is made from aluminium which cannot handle the heat from the exhaust gases and breaks down. Over time these fragments destroy the engine. A refurbished engine would need to be sleeved due to the cylinder damage so is a possibility.

Unfortunately, none. Finance the repairs yourself or dispose of it for what you can get.
As above, it was crazy to finance a car beyond the end of it's likely economic life.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

What makes you think 12 years old is beyond its economic life?
