Unfortunately, none. Finance the repairs yourself or dispose of it for what you can get.
As above, it was crazy to finance a car beyond the end of it's likely economic life.
What makes you think 12 years old is beyond its economic life?
I think this thread provides one answer to that question.
  • So what other options do I have?

Is this a reasonable fault to experience on an 8yo, 100k mile car?

You're going to be very hard pushed to prove it isn't.

£8k "repair"? Perhaps with a brand spankin' engine at dealer prices. But what about with a used engine out of a scrap car? Look at Copart for similar cars with collision damage other than a hard front-ender.
A used engine would be no good as it would have the same issue, I wasn't aware of any of this before I got it otherwise I would have looked for either a different car. Busily the egr cooler is made from aluminium which cannot handle the heat from the exhaust gases and breaks down. Over time these fragments destroy the engine. A refurbished engine would need to be sleeved due to the cylinder damage so is a possibility.
If you don't want a used engine then your options are a new engine or scrapping the car and paying off the finance company.
  • This is the issue and the reason why a used engine is not the answer, I would happily get a used engine fitted otherwise https://www.hypermiler.co.uk/volkswagen/vw-transporter-t5-1-t6-excessive-oil-use-for-cfca-2-0-180hp-bitdi-engines-egr-failure

I've only had it just over a year and i purchased with a 5 year finance.
The bill to repair could be upto 8k if the turbos are ruined too. Or do I have any other options?
I assume that whatever used car warranty the car was supplied with has now expired?  Sometimes, main dealer approved used schemes offer a longer warranty, but then I assume this car was outside of that group being 7 yo when purchased.

Has all the servicing been carried out at the same main dealer?  You may be able to approach them for some "goodwill" contribution.

There will not be any option to claim anything from the finance company as far as I can tell.  The finance company provide you money - whether you use that money to buy a car or light a bonfire, the finance agreement still needs to be honoured.  Some may mention S75, and I am not an expert, but doubt it would provide the cover you need in this situation.

The thing is, you are saying repair "could" be "up to" £8k.  So, the repair could be less than £8k.  The first thing you need to do is establish what the repair will actually cost.  Look at main dealer all new parts options, by all means, but also be open to an independent garage and reconditioned parts.  Once you know the costs and options to repair, you can make an informed decision about your next steps, as you will then know:
    • What you purchased the vehicle for
    • Remaining finance outstanding
    • Value of the vehicle working
    • Value of the vehicle not working
    • Costs of repairs

You don't seem to have said what vehicle it is - there may be people with specific knowledge of the issue that can comment.

I would never trust garage or dealership who use the term "dead engine".  It usually means "We can't be bothered".  Many garages will be bothered fixing cars even if they have complex faults.

There seems to be quiet a bit of info about the issue that I've dug up but I'm not an expert nor a mechanic. The vehicle is a vw caravelle so essentially a transporter. The failure happened Friday night so I'm still trying to garner quotes and options for the repair. You are correct the 8k is for a vw supplied new engine, egr cooler, turbos and labour. As far as I can gather all the ancillaries should be ok apart from any part that oil flows around hence needing turbos but ac pump, power steering and alternator etc will be ok. I would of course be happy for my regular indy to do the work and even fit a recon engine, if I can find one. I've been given some leads to chase in regard to that but they don't list prices and I can't get hold of anyone over the weekend (including my indy). As for the service history it isn't all vw but it has all been done on time with invoices to prove but I assume that may be a sticking point to get any goodwill from vw.
A few of you have questioned my wisdom in buying this vehicle and I feel I need to justify it. I have 4 children, 2 of which are on the autistic spectrum, because of this we need to carry equipment with us and need the flexibility in the seating offered by the caravelle. I couldn't afford 50k on a new one so this appeared to be our best option. We had a BMW 2 series gran tourer before but that just wasn't adequate any more. I'm happy to pay maintenance on my vehicles but this is excessive

Thank you, I have emailed them. They don't have my engine advertised but I've asked anyway
  • So a bit of an update, estimate to repair is £7,600 assuming the turbo needs doing too. Warranty provided by the dealer was for 15 months with a max payout of £2,500. I did speak to the finance provider and they have asked for an independent engineer to inspect and if the engineer deems it a fault that was present at sale and has developed to this they will entertain meeting some of the cost. It will be at least a week before the garage can get it in to start striping it.
  • I don't think 8 years old vehicle could be the responsibility of the manufacturer, but you can tell us the vehicle model and manufacturer, and we can check what duration and mileage are covered by the manufacturer. Moreover, keep in mind, car warranty duration and mileage is always decided by the manufacturer but still can consider consumer rights if you provide further information.
