Marriage Tax Allowance

Hi, does anyone know if I can stop marriage tax claims.com from getting my tax refund. I thought they were part of HMRC and applied through them for marriage tax allowance, now they are getting my refund and will take £100 and 42%. Which amounts to about 75% of my refund which is a complete rip off as if you go direct it’s free and I thought I was going direct
thank you

Suggest you post in the Cutting Tax forum. This is the welfare benefits forum.Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.1

Their home page makes it clear that they charge for their service and that claims can be made directly with HMRC without a fee. Their fee structure is also very clear and visible. I can't see any way that a reasonable person could confuse this site with HMRC. If you formed a contract with them and they have provided the service then they are entitled to claim their fees. It might be a rip off, but it's one you agreed to even after the company making it explicitly clear twice on their home page that a free claim is available via HMRC directly.

It is the person who doesn't apply who gets the refund (if one is due).
Did the Marriage Allowance recipient sign up with this third party as well as the applicant?0 -
So, my partner and I got married last year. He is retired so his income is less than his personal allowance so we applied for marriage tax allowance so I could have 10% of his personal allowance. We used marriagetaxclaims.com but you can apply direct which we found out afterwards. Anyway, the claim has been approved and I have received a letter from HMRC saying I have a refund of £248, however the cheque is going to MTC.com and they take 42% & £100!!0

It's a shame you didn't go direct to hmrc.gov.uk, that's all you need for everything Government related. No googling required to end up at a website that pay google to have their site appear near the top of the searches.1

I know and the link posted by the person above is not the same as the website I used. This one has way more information and it does state at the very end that you can claim direct. The one I used listed everything HMRC would do and mentioned HMRC officers in the first 2 lines which totally gave the impression that it was part of HMRC. Anyway, like I say, it’s a rip off and we need people to be aware of it. I am not losing a lot of money but I have read about others who had refunds in the thousands and ended up with only half.0

He must have applied if you are getting a refund. And therefore you presumably agreed to the third party companies terms.
Most things government related are dealt with through gov.uk nowadays and have been for some time.
HMRC do not "approve" claims, they simply check if you are both eligible and calculate both parties tax accordingly. Most people in the UK are eligible, but not everyone can benefit from Marriage Allwoance0 -
If your code has been changed to give the allowance then any repayment for the current yeat will come through your wages. So it will not go the claims company.
if you married before 6 April 2020 then there may be a repayment due for the tax year 2019/20 . In that case it will go the claims company.
Current year amendments are done before HMRC calculate previous years.
if there is no repayment due for 2019/20 then the claims company probably wouldn't take any further action as there would be nothing in it for them.0
