As long as it is suitable with background, size, etc. it doesn't matter how the photo was taken originally but I think you will struggle with a selfie.

Try to position the phone somewhere steady and use the timer option to give yourself 10 seconds or more to get into place against a plain background.

The quality of a normal photo will be much better than the selfie option.

Why do you think its not allowed? How do you think they test based looking at the picture if you or someone else triggered the shutter?

Not used a selfie for a passport photo but have used one for a visa because they wanted a photo that wasnt the standard dimensions of a passport photo (think it was for India) and didn't have any problems.

I used this for my passport. https://www.idphoto4you.com/ No reason not to use a selfie if it meets the requirements.

  • A "selfie" is acceptable as long as it meets the criteria and quality required for the online application - otherwise the image will be electronically rejected.

Martins guide clearly states "selfies" are not allowed.

Selfies often seem to give distorted images with enormous chins for instance.  I imagine a photo could be rejected on the basis that it is not a true likeness.  Isn't it easier for someone to take a photo of you or prop the phone up and use the timer as has been suggested?

    I didn't know that.
Of course, if it is accepted by the online electronic scan....................who is to know ?
I would never attempt a selfie in any case - better to use the photo booth in the local supermarket.
I tried my Nikon SLR, lens in suitable portrait setting, on a tripod with timer, with and without flash..........no joy.
What should work in theory is not always true in practice !!!

A selfie is a mirror image so therefore would affect the facial matching   Although it’s not obvious on most images if there are any distinguishing marks etc they will be on the wrong side of the face   Just get someone to take the photo for you

A mirror image does not meet the criteria
