Porting is usually an hours downtime at most, often much less. Your daughter won't be unobtainable, as the temporary number will be working until shortly before the original one is ported back.No free lunch, and no free laptop

You should look at the small print for the deal you are interested in. I have seen some "new customer" offers for some companies where they've made it clear you can't have been a customer in the last say 12 months etc.melb said:and if I ported out of EE and back in again within a short period of time (indeed in any time span) would I still be considered a "new customer"? thanks

Why port back to EE?
Most providers offer a new client deal.

I recently purchased through a third party reseller with a cashback deal (which comes from the reseller) and ported my old number to asda and back again to the original network.
And have received the first cashback claim.0
