Car tax changes

I keep seeing articles on google news feeds about possible changes in the way we will be charged for car tax per mile we travel?
I have a citroen C1 and currently only pay £20 a year, but if I get charged per mile its going to be extremely expencive as I live in a rural area and need a car to travel the 9 miles to work everyday, so thats 18 miles a day I do just for work.

How much are they going to charge per mile?  Is it a sliding scale or a fixed price-per-mile?  Are there exemptions?  How do you know it'll be more expensive for you?  It might work out cheaper.

You're also forgetting the idea it would replace the tax on fuel.  How much does that cost you per year?  Much more than £20 I can assure you.

Considering you don't know the answer to any of these, it's a moot point.  Were these articles clickbait by any chance?  Or perhaps from the Daily Mail?

Ignore it. It's all speculation, no more than that.

There won't be any official announcements made until the next budget - currently scheduled for 3rd March.

You could cycle that and leave the car at home

I would love a 9 mile commute as I currently do a 25 mile commute , fancy a swap if you are so concerned about such a short distance?

No because sometimes my hubby takes me so he can have the car for other things, plus its very steep hills around here. And who wants to be out all weathers on a push bike?

Well you cant get much cheaper than £20 for a whole year can you? Plus if they tax fuel per mile that could be very expencive as we all know how fuel prices fluctuates so I'm not sure how that could work per mile. You would notice sudden increases and sudden decreases.

I used to cycle 8 miles to work when I was 16 , I lived on top of a massive hill then and work was at the bottom , going to work was a lot of fun , coming home was a bit of a !!!!!! though ....

You sound right now like you're just trying to make excuses not to do some excercise

Yes you can !

Lots of cars currently pay zero VED pretty sure thats cheaper than £20......

Please explain how they would tax fuel per mile?

Simple way to do it is to pay VED per mile based on what the mileage is at the MOT compared to last year's, problem is that would lead to a lot of cars being clocked

What??  Tax fuel per mile?  Are you actually old enough to drive?

They already tax fuel - fuel duty is currently something like 60p in the pound.  And then you have 20% VAT on top of that.  If they were to charge a tax per mile, that would likely heavily reduce fuel duty, so your fuel would become much cheaper.

I don't know why I'm bothering to try and explain this...  Just go back to Facebook.

I don't know if you've noticed, but they have this magic technology know that knows where your car is without having to look at a map, and can report that over a telephone that doesn't even use wires!

The fundamental infrastructure for road pricing is not rocket science. Introducing it has been on various governments' priority lists for a decade and a half.
