As a couple of others have said, the M60 is usually fine in the morning going anti clockwise ie South to East, which is what you would be doing from Stockport to Ashton. I live in Stockport and have worked in Chadderton (Oldham - one junction further on than Ashton) since 2011 and unless there's an accident it usually only took me 20-30 minutes to get there, and half of that is me getting from my house onto the M60. (this is in the days when I did actually leave my house to go to the office lol, have worked from home since March so I'm talking about 20-30 mins in the old pre pandemic heavy traffic, not now when the roads are quieter). In the other direction it's a nightmare and would take forever. So OP, in a long winded way I'm saying don't let the commute put you off Stockport.

I live in Stockport and would agree the commute on the M60 in this area is worse anti-clockwise in the morning and then clockwise in the evening. I have driven those bad flows lots, and although its is frustrating it is stop-start and does move. Also as has been said, getting to the motorway is probably the worst part of the commute, rather than being on it. An area like the Heatons has easier peak time access to the motorway than where I live in Woodley, but the cost of living in the Heatons is significantly higher. I've only just moved, and chose to stick where I am thanks to the swathes of countryside easily accessed from where I am, whereas the Heatons just has a few local parks.0

I was born and brought in Stalybridge, my Dad still lives there now. Like any place it has good and bad bits. Unfortunately the town centre has died, but it does have fantastic rail links from Lancs to t'other side. The primary school I went to rated extremely high in the SATS tables nationally. Mottram is quite a nice area, like someone said on the way to Glossop.Oh and yes it does rain ALOT! Here in London, it can look grey, almost threatening but can still brighten up in the day. In Manchester, when it's grey, it's really grey and for the 48 hours which follow.Savings as of April 2023 Savings account - £26460.50(14474.88)Current account - £2140.24(4576.79)Total - £28600.74(19051.67) £1010 (£65pm CS/BS) £250 CS/BS/JS0

Hi Welcome to Manchester,
Avoid oldham yes, some places are a !!!!!! hole. Saddleworth, Greenfield, Uppermill areas of Oldham are beautiful. Also Whitworth is a lovely place.
They're the only places I can suggest as I don't know many others outside of Oldham.0 -
