I have come across an opportunity in Ashton-under-Lyne in the next 6 months. We would be relocating from Bradford.
Having done our research: Altrincham, Saleq  and areas in Trafford, Didsbury are the best in terms of school but quite overpriced.

We are looking for a nice area in terms of school for our LO but also making sure my commute is not more than 30 minutes as I understand M60 is a nightmare at rush hour. Looking for a spacious house as we think this could be our forever home. Budget between 300k-500k (we may have to rent for 6-12 months to get a bigger deposit if nice area and we go over the above budget). Need good public transport links as partner does not drive.

Ps. Have looked at Mossley in Tameside. Been told to avoid Oldham, Stalybridge and Ashton-under-lyne.

Please provide your helpful suggestions on areas and your views on commuting longer than 30 minutes.

I grew up in Altrincham and later, Sale. Both are nice, as is Timperley, Hale, Hale Barns and Bowden.

Thanks Ducktard. The areas you mentioned are too expensive to get half decent house in.
We are looking for nice areas which are easy commutable to Ashton-under-Lyne (ideally avoiding M60).
  • Have you looked around Stockport? “The Heatons” are nice, I know they’re supposed to be a little expensive but might be more affordable than something like Altrincham. Urmston / Flixton are nice and a little more affordable than other areas in South Manchester, but I don’t know what your commute would be like from there, probably a bit horrible!

Trafford schools that  are outstanding i believe haven’t been inspected for over 10 years.  They have the two tiered grammar school system and the private ones arent great.  Schools is what completely put me off Manchester.  It would have to be one hell of a job to get me to relocate there.

What exactly is a half decent house to you?
