What is the point? They could have spent time and money on improving other aspects of their service. Like employing extra customer service people or improving online and apps. Or even giving better interest rates!

Why does HSBC need all of these brands - FD, M&S Bank, John Lewis Financial Services as well as HSBC

Only FD are within the HSBC group. But use some of their own systems & HSBC systems/back office. (Notice how you can't find FD figures anywhere, as they are not separated in any public figures for HSBC)
M&S have their own banking licence, just use HSBC systems and back office.
John Lewis again just use HSBC systems & back office.

TBH. FD would be better off with a CEO that had some bottle to look to hook up with one of the new kids on the block & ditch HSBC.

But they are owned by HSBC so only a sale would make that happen surely

The story is a little more complex in case of M&S:

M&S Bank is part of the HSBC Group. Marks & Spencer is a registered trademark of Marks and Spencer plc and is used under licence.

FD is just a division (brand) of HSBC Bank UK not a distinct entity.
M&S Bank and John Lewis Bank are not part of HSBC Bank UK but are all part of the HSBC group.
