    Wow, what a relief.

I fell similarly foul when I told my son to see how much business use was 'just in case' as it's usually free. It was about £160 so he decided not to bother but then had to get a letter from his employers declaring he doesn't have to drive for business.

Lesson learned when using comparison sites!

Hopefully OP has learnt something  from all this !
We have all learned that insurance companies do pointless imbecilic  things like this which can be easily overcome by using false details which makes no sense to me at all and I struggle to see how this is consistent with their duty to treat customers fairly
To call it anti fraud is stupid as the potential fraudster can easily overcome the checks
It is also nonsense to suggest that someone does not tell the truth by trying different mileages.
We have 2 cars and I might just be seeing which car is best to use to get to work each day and do not understand how else I could check this.
An insurer could easily check on the MOT database for mileage if they are that bothered
The application is asking for a quote . It is not a contract.

  • It isn't just about playing around with mileage though , it is about excessive playing around with lots of details which will flag up "possible" fraud.
Minor alteraions in mileage , adding and subtracting extra drivers etc. aren't really an issue but adding and subtracting accidents , claims , convictions etc. and you are asking for trouble.
In this case the OP was very naive and obviously didn't do any research ( considering that this site has several articles about obtaining car insurance ).
He has been lucky in managing to overcome this cancellation and needs to take this into account  in future .

I don't believe that the OP was in any way naive.

I often play around with details, particularly mileages, because of the way that some insurance companies price their policies.  In my second car I always drive less than 3000 miles per year.  It is not lying to obtain a quote for travelling under 3000 miles per year, but nor is it lying to obtain a quote for under 4000, under 5000 etc and, bizarrely, the higher figure can occasionally produce a cheaper quote.  Should I include my son as a driver on the policy so that he can, if necessary, drive my car if his old banger is off the road, or would it be cheaper to simply add him on for a week if neccessary during the year?.

The OP's naivety was to choose Hastings who deservedly have a terrible reputation for customer service.

  • So he was naive then ?
I had already said that playing around with the mileage wasn't the issue.
I have two cars and put 4,000 on one and 7,000 on the other to make sure I'm covered for enough miles.
I also add relatives to my policies.
On one car I usually put my daughter and on the other my son.
This year when I was getting quotes for the one with my son on , I decided out of interest to add my daughter as well.
The quote went down from £290 +£50 cashback to £199+£50 cashback ...even though she will never drive the car .
