MAPFRE Tyre Insurance

Has anyone had any recent dealings with this company, (based in Bristol)?

OH has had insurance for his tyres with this company that covers punctures etc.  He successfully claimed for a new tyre in January 2020 and they paid out.

On the 14th December 2020 he got another puncture and this required a new tyre which cost £111 from ATS.  He wasn't able to get this done until the 18th December and we sent off the required photos and scan of the invoice to MAPFRE on the 20th December.  We have heard nothing, other than an automated email back.  I have emailed a reminder and we've tried to phone them and they don't reply.

We are paying £19 a month for this insurance and wondering now if it's actually worth having it.  It was set up by Evans Halshaw on purchase of the car in November 2019.

Thanks in advance.

You're basically paying for two new tyres a year. I'd be wondering if it was worth it too!

Mapfre are withdrawing from the UK market after continual losses over the years. Latest contact numbers on their site are here
Mapfre Claims Portal  presumably you have the Tyre and Alloy cover so try the Alloy Claim number - I suspect it's someone working from home as the area code is Chipping Sodbury not Bristol where the HQ is/was

That's what we plan to do.  The next payment is due to go out on 23rd Jan.  We tried one of the numbers on the link that was previously posted and got a recorded message to say their call centre was closed due to unforeseen circumstances and to email claims@mapfre.co.uk.  We have had an automated email back.   I will give them a bit of time to see if they will honour the claim, but whether they do or not, we are going to tell them to cancel and cancel the direct debit.

Just a question, if someone tries to take a payment and you've cancelled the direct debit, you don't get charged by your bank for a failed direct debit, do you?  Does that only happen if you've not enough funds in the account?

No, but some companies will bend the rules and reestablish the direct debit.

What does your policy state about cancellation? Stopping payment normally doesnt cancel a policy, just as your employer cannot let you go simply by stopping your wages, but instead creates a debt with possible fees and means the policy gets voided for non-payment - and if it is actually an insurance policy it means declaring for life that you've had insurance terminated/voided.

Depends on the supply chain... for a similar kind of arrangement I was involved in, after tax:

    Retailer: 50%
    Intermediary (us): 25%
    Insurer: 25%

What made the above even worse was that we had no involvement in the process at all once we'd done the deal with the retailer... the insurer set up the portal that the retailer used to input the sale, insurer did all the administration of the policy, claims etc and we just got a quarterly cheque for 25% of the net premiums. We in theory had some reputational risk as our branding was on some docs but thats it.

Retailers were lazy though, they could buy a series of such products from us and have one supplier to manage (not that it took any managing) and get 50% of the premiums rather than having to find half a dozen or so different companies, vet them, manage them etc and who knows what percentage they could then get.

As far as I recall Mapfre Tyre and Alloy Cover was always single premium paid at outset, who is the £19 pm being paid to is it a lender rather than the insurer? you can still cancel the policy either way but I would be wary of doing this solely by cancelling the DD.

I was going to contact them to tell them to cancel the policy etc, it was just in case of non-contact from them.

I will keep copies of correspondence in case they say I haven't told them.

The policy details says you can cancel outside the cooling off period, you will get a refund of the unused portion of the premium minus £20 admin fee.  But I don't see how that can be as we pay monthly.  The policy was for 36 months from Nov 2019.
