According to Wired Facebook were already gathering this Whatsapp data anyway since 2016, they just now updated their T&C to clarify it more. That and it doesnt apply to the UK. So really isnt an issue.

I am fairly confident Facebook scrapes metadata (including contact information) out of WhatsApp and uses it to supplement the datasets they build up on people, including the shadow profiles of non-Facebook users. That's what prompted to switch to Telegram shortly after the Facebook acquisition.

The "complaint" that some people have is that Facebook will start scanning for keywords in WhatsApp messages, by breaking the end-to-end encrypting WhatsApp uses for the purposes of data collection. That is of course not happening, the data Facebook is collecting is entirely who connects with who, not reading the content, but the conspiracy theorists believe that Facebook is going to start reading the content.

Just to clear this up, here is the WhatsApp Privacy Policy that applies to the EU region:

Except in certain circumstances, they don't store or have access to messages themselves. But there is a lot of data they do collect, including logs, activity, device information and location. They may also collect information about you from other WhatsApp users and freely share that information. It looks like the policy permits them to amalgamate WhatsApp and Facebook data. It uses some fairly open ended terms. As to whether a WhatsApp user is having an affair, I think a pattern of contact along with other metadata could be used to give a high liklehood if not absolute proof of that.

How accurate is the information you didn't give them and they guessed/assumed?

Google isn't Whatsapp/facebook though
