'Leaving WhatsApp will be hard - but it is the right thing to do'

Interesting article in the Independent for those who don't like Facebook's ownership of WhatsApp:
Leaving WhatsApp will be hard – but it is the right thing to do | The Independent

The Signal app is mentioned as being what WhatsApp used to be, but without FB's harvesting of information. Who has experience of Signal and can report back? Thanks.

I noticed a Facebook post very recently from someone on my friends list who said they were closing their FB account and moving to Signal. That's the first I'd heard about it.

  • Sorry am I missing the point here or something, what is wrong with Facebook ownership of Watsapp anyway? Why are people made to think they have to jump ship to Signal whatever that is lol.
Won't it be a hassle and people might lose facebook friends through switching?

So you're asking for reports from people who have experience of an obscure app but fail to even mention it in the thread title.

     Good luck with that.

Personally I think Viber is better than Whatsapp with more features. However, at the end of the day, if you can't persuade your contacts to engage in whatever is your favourite, you are going to fail.
I've got Signal on my phone but only use it to message two others occasionally so haven't really delved into it.

Under the current terms Facebook doesn't access the Whatsapp data.  Under the new terms Facebook can use the Whatsapp data for whatever Facebook wants to.  Facebook wants to use the Whatsapp data to make money from it as it does with Facebook account data.  This results in privacy concerns.

Signal is a messaging app similar to Whatsapp that is privacy focused.
