  • Yeah I understand that and I think it was probably the high interest and the making money off you people were referring to when they were warning me.

I will clear the balance and pay in full each month and build up my history as advised.

vanquis are offering a service to people who may find it difficult to get credit due to defaults etc so while the service isn't great they are the first rung of the ladder for people who want to improve their credit file.
There are other sub prime cards like aqua tesco foundation 118card and capital one classic to name afew but vanquis do seem to accept more people early on when people are rebuilding their finances.
  • Appreciate all the comments.

I got the PIN number yesterday and the card today, activated it too.
  • I've had my Vanquis card for over 18 months and in this time had no problems. I clear balance every month.

It does take awhile to improve ones credit score with them.

They gave me my credit start many years ago which I'm grateful for, always paid my balance in full, but
    not been impressed lately.

For several years I've had a recurring payment for a subscription (£15) many months ago suddenly started getting texts (around 2am) which later changed to automated calls (7-9am) every month like clockwork asking me to confirm the payment.

I wrote and complained in September, zero response.

I've now moved that subscription payment to another card because despite my hoop jumping they refused to authorise the payment two months running and I had to pay the company by another means.

It's now my secondary card and if I could get accepted elsewhere for another Visa CC (on a low income so difficult to get accepted) I would close it.

I had a mailshot from Vanquis inviting me to apply for a credit card when I was almost three years into a 6-year IVA. I checked with the fine print of my IVA and saw that I was allowed to take out credit "up to £500", and so I applied. They gave me a card with a £400 limit initially, and I used it regularly paying it off every month. After a few months they raised the credit limit to £1000 but I was very careful never to let the balance go over the £500 limit. Over a period of 3.5 years they raised the credit limit to £4k, where it currently stands.

The only contact I ever had with their customer service was when I lost my wallet and had to replace all my cards, and the replacement Vanquis card was quicker to arrive than my replacement Co-op Bank Debit card.

I am now a year out of the IVA, and my financial situation is much improved. Eventually I will seek a "better" credit card, but my priority at the moment is to get a better mortgage deal. I don't want to risk derailing that by applying for more credit, so I think I will be be with Vanquis for the forseeable future - a perfectly satisfied customer.

I think you'll be okay and that you've done really well to actually get a card. Lenders aren't too keen to give them out in these coronavirus times and when I was wanting to apply for one to do a zero percent balance transfer just after Christmas, I did soft searches and they all had, as one of the first questions 'do you expect your income to decrease in the coming months?'  They never asked that before. I decided to wait a while although I don't expect any decrease as I'm on a few pensions. But I guess anything could happen!

I'm guessing so - as long as it was closed in good standing (no defaults/outstanding balances). They have an eligibility checker, that should give you an indication if you can get the card.

Vanquis don't take ex-customers back. It's a strange policy, but it's their policy nonetheless.
