Advice needed on extremely high EDF gas bill

  • Many thanks for all the replies. It looks like I've been taking the wrong reading as stated above. Taking the kWh figure and not the m3 meter reading. I was previously on a smart meter with EON. The meter is a Liberty EG4v10 which I take manual readings on.
For Electric readings - which figure should I be looking at on the meter?

Press 9, again, and it will say kW IMP (kilowatts imported) The figures will then flash up. It is seven digits plus decimals. My tip is to count the noughts (so if three noughts then read four digits from left). EDF think these meters are only 5 digits, as are the vast majority of domestic meters. Expect chaos in a year or two when there is only one zero on the left.

The above is the instructions for a single rate supply. If it is multi-rate (which yours doesn't appear to be, going by the bill), you usually press 6, but actually being able to read both indexes in one go is virtually impossible, even for people reading meters day in, day out. It does vary, depending on how a particular supplier programs the meter. What never varies, IME, is the numbers disappear in a flash and then you have to wait for it to cycle through dozens of things you didn't want to know.
  • Update on bill.
As suggested it turned out I'd been supplying the wrong readings for both my gas and electric bills to EDF. I've just received my new bill which is half the previous one but still nearly £1000 in debt. They have written off part of the electricity bill (not sure how much) because of the error.
I'm still not happy about this. I have previously complained about not receiving a bill for 540 days (which was resolved) and now it turns out I've been submitting the wrong readings. Nobody from EDF has ever visited to check the readings. As stated previously, i was on a smart meter with EON before I moved to EDF. Surely EDF should have noticed the error from my final bill with EON. Also after my last complaint they advised that my D/D be set at £120 a month which I was informed would be enough to cover winter and now it turns out I'm £1000 in debt.
Do I have any comeback with EDF?

Are you sure the new bill is correct?
If you were giving them the kWh reading instead of m3 then you were inflating your gas bill by 11x, it doesn't sound like your gas bill has gone down enough...
If you have the final bill from E.ON take the closing gas meter reading from there and compare to your current meter reading, that will give you the total gas consumed since you switched to EDF.

  • This is what was in the email. I sent photos of the new readings to confirm they were correct.

Please could you call us back on 0333 200 5100 when you are available to discuss your open complaint we have since corrected your account balance based on the readings provided and amended your latest bill. As of the latest read your account balance is currently £962.05.

When amending the opening reads it was found that if we corrected the electricity opening reads to the estimate we had projected your bill would have been more expensive so we have left these as they are. All reads going forward will run in line with the previous readings.

So do the opening readings they have used for the new bill match your closing readings from E.ON

This can easily be cleaned up by providing us with your final bill from eon
then give us a copy of this latest amended bill and we can calculate how much you’ve used and owe.

Don't pay, they are fleecing you, it's their fault for not sending a meter reader round to get the correct reading

That isn't a safe presumption, the obligation to regularly read the meters for you isn't there any more and when the customer is providing regular meter readings they are allowed to regard them as accurate.
Doesn't mean there isn't still something wrong with the bill calculation though...

  • The bill they given to me covers from Feb 2019 until 12 Jan 2021 and is £962. They said i could increase my D/D and then pay an extra £25 a month which they state should hopefully pay off my deficit in 3 years. I want to leave this company asap because of their poor service. I looked at Ofgem and it states ""You cannot be charged for gas or electricity used more than 12 months ago if you have not been correctly billed by a supplier". So I've contact EDF again and put this to them. I've also raised a complaint with the energy Ombudsman. I think the calculations are now correct but they want to backdate it by 700 days.
