Do you have any previous meter readings that you can compare.  I have attached my bill for roughly the same period and on a similar tariff  - although I think yours is a bit cheaper per unit and daily charge than mine.

The electricity figures seems similar  - note my electric meter flipped over 99999 back to 000 during this period so the readings might look weird at first.
As we may both consider ourselves reasonably standard users, it definitely suggests that something is amiss, especially as I have a gas hob extra to you.

I just checked the following on my meter.
Heating is OFF and the gas meter readings do not move at all.
Turn heating ON and immediately the figures start going round on the gas meter.  Can you turn your heating off and check the same?  ie when your heating is off then the meter isn't running.
I know everyones bills and usage are different but I hope this info at least helps work out where the issue could be.

  • thanks for your help. I'll try these suggestions and report back.

It may have helped the gas but a very high electric cost.
Indeed, using, let alone installing, electric underfloor heating when you already have gas would seem perverse, may as well just throw the money out of the window and save the inconvenience of the installation, but perhaps there is a reason for this choice that is not yet obvious...

Would as OP states is a new kitchen, then to create more wall room. perhaps existing radiator was removed and to be more "modern" then the electric heating was installed?

If so perhaps a hydronic plinth heater would have been better?

But yes it will expensive and will not help the electricty bills.

But the Op appears to be concerned about the gas usage so await photo of meter.

Your bill is certainly different !  Your gas rate is a whopping 66.2% more than mine.  It would almost certainly have been cost effective to have switched in the summer, and this may well still be the case now.

Thanks, i agree - Im a hesitant switcher, just incase things go wrong with meter readings and transfers and someone sends me a massive bill so this thread is actually my (completely irrational) waking nighmare! - I tend to just switch to another fix with EDF - I think I may move out of my comfort zone and do it though

Someone sent you a massive bill on 2 Dec 2020...
Don't delay, switch today !  Start with Citizens Advice and 'Switch with Which?' and remember that separate suppliers are often cheaper than dual fuel.  Ignore all projections and claims about savings, just do the sums yourself.  Prices may also be higher by the time your existing fix expires, so getting a fix now for next winter may make sense.

@Ant555 you are on a fixed tariff until May.21, so watch any exit fees if you switch before then (except in the last 49 days).

Re the Electric - 2127 kWh in 4 months is 6500 + in a year - that's double the average for a gas heated house.

Electric Showers ............   immersion on instead f using gas boiler ......... ?

Gas is sounding like misreads  - should be 2117 (decimal) 8 and 2815 (decimal) 1   - enter as 02117 and 02815.  About £160 for the 4 months.
Whilst the underfloor heating will no doubt add a bit to the bill, I don't necessarily agree that the electricity usage is overly high, but it would be sensible for @paulfmboro2 to check what is using it all. We have oil-fired central heating (no gas!), the boiler doesn't use that much electricity, but with TV and desktop computer(s) on for sometimes 12hrs+ our usage can approach those sort of figures.
I agree the gas sounds like a misreading issue if the meter doesn't change when the boiler is turned off. It'll be interesting to understand more about the "written off" part of the previous bills - was this due to silly gas consumption or just the OFGEM back billing rule?

From the serials on OP's bill it's those lovely Secure Liberty meters.
They won't have a decimal on the gas reading
Obviously he needs to make sure to press 9 to get to the reading

I've not read the whole thread but as a retired meter reader I think I can see the problem. The format of the meter serial number looks like a Liberty Secure smart meter. If it has a numeric keypad you need to press 9. It will then say Volume M3 and then show the reading. You may miss it the first time, as the numbers only stay there for a couple of milliseconds, but wait for it to go through its sequence and press 9 again. The number you have been submitting is the kWh reading.

To reiterate the above: you've been reporting the kWh figure which is approximately 11 x the actual m3 meter readings you should have been submitting. You will need to explain this to the supplier and get an accurate bill based on the real readings.
