Most effective way of heating using an air source heat pump (ASHP)

I turn mine off in April and back on in October, as required. I don't want it coming on during a cooler summer night when I know it's going to be 20C plus during the day. Heat pump controls are not intelligent enough to be able to see what's coming, and can only react to what's happening in the here and now, and whilst weather compensation without a thermostat can work very well in winter, it's still likely to kick in and out unnecessarily during summer months if not otherwise controlled.

As my heatpump has a pretty high quiescent power drain (its 16 years old and has a crankcase heater so cooks away at around 120watts even when doing nothing). I shut mine down in the summer and just have it on for an hour or so every two days to heat the hot water tank.

When the temp drops down around the middle of October (or we start getting cold) then it will be left on to do its own thing using weather compensation with a single thermostat used as a high limit just in case of uncommonly warm weather or excess solar gain during the day.
