Brother Printer Driver

I've come across 1603 when an application is already installed. But it can crop up for other reasons:

Yeah, I had seen this and made sure that the system account has full control permissions. Still no success. 
I have a feeling that the OS has become corrupted somewhere along the line so I think that perhaps now is the time to bite the bullet and install Windows 10.
Anyway, thanks for all your help.

There are loads of .msi files on the set-up disc but which relates to the printer driver I couldn't say.

If I download the printer driver from the brother web site this decompresses as a folder labelled gdi. Using this folder to "Add a Printer"  under "Devices and Printers" the set up is looking for an .inf file which seems to be brimm17a. It correctly identifies the model number of the printer, starts to install but then throws up the error message...

"Printer driver was not installed. Operation could not be completed (error 0x0000001e).

Thanks but unless I have missed something it doesn't appear to support Brother printers.

Thanks but I was leaving this as a last resort as I had read in several places, perhaps unfairly, that their support wasn't too hot and I'll have to psyche myself up before I go through the whole rigmarole with someone simply reading from a script. .
