Brother Printer Driver

Just bought a Brother DCP-L2530DW Mono Laser Printer but I’m unable to get the printer driver to install on my custom built PC running Windows7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1 with 8GB RAM, 466GB SSD and AMD FX-6100 CPU.

I went through the process of setting up the printer from the supplied installation disk but the printer driver didn’t install.

Removed the programme, disabled all security software and attempted a fresh install but with the same result.

I then downloaded the Full Driver and Software Package from the Brother website but still no driver install.

Having located the driver in my download folder and I tried to manually install it but I got the following error message…
“Windows found driver software but encountered an error. The system cannot read from the specified device.”

I have tried manually adding the printer in Devices and Printers but I get the error message…
“Printer driver was not installed. Operation could not be completed (error 0x0000001e)."

The printer itself is showing up in the Devices and Printers window but indicates an error which needs troubleshooting. Running the troubleshooter just tells me that the printer driver is not installed.

I am going round in circles on this one so any suggestions would be gratefully received.

"Cannot read from the specified device" (even when you're installing from the hard drive) is almost always a memory issue.  Or anti-virus.  But if the computer blue screens with this code that is memory.

    Thanks Neil,
MEMTEST confirms that there doesn't appear to be any memory problems.
    All security software disabled.
    No BSOD.

Which version of Memtest have you used?  There's a few different versions floating around - one's built into Windows 7 (which will be years out of date by now), and then there's Memtest86 (which can only boot from USB in the latest version) and  Memtest86+ which if your computer is set up for UEFI will load the more advanced version, otherwise it will load up the legacy v4.2 which, being many years older, isn't as thorough as the newer version.  Also you need to let it run for a few passes.

MemTest 86 V4 bootable image for legacy BIOS platform which was run to conclusion.

    Thanks, that looks interesting.
I'll give it a try and let you know how I get on.

@CoastingHatbox. Still getting the same error message but thanks for your suggestions.
As I have tried most things over the last couple of days I've a feeling it may be a Windows7 problem. Maybe time to move to Windows10  :/
  • If might be worth downloading https://live.sysinternals.com/procmon.exe and working out exactly what is happening at the point the driver installation fails. That will show all file, registry access and network calls. It can be like looking for a needle in a haystack but you can add exclusion filters to exclude the noise from other processes running on the machine.

Good suggestion - I had forgotten about procmon.

I couldn’t identify any problems in procmon. Doesn’t mean to say there aren’t any, just that I couldn’t find anything that seemed to be relevant.

However, Windows Reliability Monitor listed the following errors…

“Unsuccessful driver installation. Driver management concluded the process to install driver NULL Driver Instance USB\VID_04F9&PID_0420&MI_01\6&15DF5F80&0&0001 with the following status:0xe0000203”

“Unsuccessful application installation. Windows installer installed the product. Product Name: Brother Printer Driver. Product Version: 1.7.0.0. Product Language 0. Manufacturer: Brother Industries Ltd.. Installation success or error status: 1603”

I’ve tried searching on both of these errors, but in the words of the old saying …I may be better informed but I’m none the wiser.
