2021 Fashion On The Ration Challenge

I agree. It’s the one purchase where it pays to be brand-loyal, whatever the cost, once you have had your gait analysed. I had mine done at Lilywhites, years ago. A couple of years later, I had it done again at a specialist running shop. Both times, they recommended ASICS.PollyWollyDoodle said:Wow that’s a great bargain for running shoes Pip - I don’t want to tell you how much I paid for mine but it was significantly more than that! Coupons/money well spent in my opinion, it’s important to have suitable shoes for running.

Spend to declare: second-hand tweed jacket, so no coupons.
I got inspired by the latest Sewing Bee so decided to make a recycled waistcoat - I was tempted by just buying the fabric (at about the same price) but held firm. It was the largest jacket I could find that I liked the look of, so should have enough for 1, maybe 2 waistcoats and a handbag - will see how it goes.2024 Fashion on the Ration - 10/66 coupons used

That sounds exciting, keep us posted on the progress. While I like the idea of cutting stuff up to make other clothes I’m a little bit scared that it won’t work out. That denim dress though … amazing.Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. Kindness in another’s trouble, courage in your own.4

I loved those Sewing Bee items too. I often think their recycling attempts are more or less a waste of cloth but the most recent ones were definitely worth watching and learning from.
Well done on the trainers, @PipneyJane. I haven't been running recently but I desperately need to replace my running shoes so I will have a look at Asics online. I have a similar ankle problem to yours and the right support makes a massive difference - though I have wide feet too so I will need to find and try them in actual shops to be sure they are comfortable.
I'm just back from a couple of days sorting at Mum's old house, where I found a whole box full of knitting patterns - 1940s to 1960s! I am so excited! Unfortunately I will have to lose more weight to try some of them - Mum was slimmer than I am, by far! All the lessons I'm learning (the hard way!) about working out what yarn and how much of it is needed for old patterns, all those could come in useful but in the meantime I'm just going to enjoy them.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. @Cherryfudge I definitely recommend going to a running shop that does gait analysis. I felt a bit of a fraud as I’m a very new runner but the shop I went to was very friendly and helpful.Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. Good luck, @Wraithlady. Do you know whether the Sewing Bee patterns are sold anywhere?Wraithlady said:Spend to declare: second-hand tweed jacket, so no coupons.

On a slightly different topic, I read a very interesting article yesterday, on why synthetic fibres don’t make for long lasting projects. Given the conversations we’ve had over cleaning and preserving old fabric, I thought you might be interested.

I had it looked at by a physio some years ago Polly. My ankles have a slight inward turn and I should wear arch support. In fact they gave me orthotics but they have been more of a problem as the arthritic joints have unhelpfully grown upwards so the extra depth of the orthotics means I get callouses on the top of my feet! Next step was for the podiatrist to hollow out the orthotic under the relevant toe, which didn't help. So I've been wearing arch-support trainers for the last few years and they really help.PollyWollyDoodle said:@Cherryfudge I definitely recommend going to a running shop that does gait analysis. However, I used a gait analysis thingy at a sports shop and it didn't pick up on the pronation, possibly because the muscles are now kept in place by habitual use of the trainers? So I'm wary of further shop analysis, though it could be that particular shop. If anyone has more info on how gait analysis works with a known/treated problem, I'd be happy to listen as I want to keep myself in working condition as much as possible!

@DrCarrie, @TwibbleDee is correct. A bra is 1.5 coupons.TwibbleDee said:

When I had mine done, @Cherryfudge, it was done totally by eye. (That was over 20 years ago.) I have a vague memory of walking over a squidgy bit of matting in bare feet, but nothing more.Cherryfudge said:

In your case, @Cherryfudge, I'd rely on what the physio told you. On the Asics website, you want to select "Stability" shoes. That's code for overpronation. (It explains it down the bottom of each shoe's page, too.)
