Totally off topic, Prince Philip has died. I just saw the announcements. The Queen must be devastated. So close to his 100th birthday, too.

PS; At least we won't have to dress the village hall for mourning. It's already covered in black blackout cloth.

He was to me an example of a life well lived.
Very sad for the Queen in particular.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

I always thought I wasn't a monarchist until the internet came along and I read the comments of anti-monarchists and as a result I've ended up fairly supportive of the monarchy!
He certainly worked very hard, both with the Queen and on his own - and he was a large part of the modernising changes, I understand, working to reduce he them-and-us divisions between aristos and commoners, things like getting rid of the tradition of debutantes being presented at Court, and having more garden parties and similar informal functions to which a lot wider section of society was invited and so on. His reputation doesn't do him justice.
Definie advantage having the Village Hall already draped in black - should we pop a bit of black round the frame of the picture of the Queen on the wall there, though, d'you think?2025 remaining: 37 coupons from 66:

My thoughts exactly, @Laura_Elsewhere
I don't think I've mentioned my mum's Prince Philip story. It's from during the War, when she was in the WAAAF and based at Victoria Barracks in Melbourne. They had a scheme where, when the Royal Navy came into port, the staff could "adopt a sailor" and take him home for a meal. (They probably did it for the Americans, too.) Anyway, Prince Philip's ship docked at Port Melbourne and one of the WAAAF was assigned to take him home to her parents for dinner. The poor girl had real problems because her parents insisted on knowing his name beforehand and, of course, he was just listed as "Philip". No surname. They kept demanding his surname until, eventually, someone higher up informed them that he was "Prince Philip of Greece" and didn't have a surname.

@PipneyJane, gosh that invisible-surname problem runs in their family, then...
When his son Charles did Archaeology as part of his degree at Cambridge there was apparently a local prehistoric site of great interest to which the dept was refused access for field-rips over and again through the years. Apparently it was owned by a farmer known for two things: his deep loathing of all students and archaeologists and his deep love of the Royals...
You're way ahead of me here, aren't you?
Cue he day when a minibus drew up, and hordes of students got out, inc one innocuously-named "Charles Windsor"... furious farmer roars up in his Landie, jumps out, shotgun in hand and starts bellowing the odds...
"Ahh, Farmer Giles," coos the exultant lecturer. "I don't believe you've met Charles Windsor, one of our students who is *so* keen to see this site..."
Farmer Giles goggles incredulously at the unmistakeable ears and face of...

I hadn't ever watched it, having assumed it was as uninteresting to me as the Bake Off thing.... then I watched one and got hooked.
I still find it frustrating - why on earth don't they have a five minute bit in the middle with someone explaining and showing, f'rinstance, different ways to put in zips, or how to hem a curved edge, or how binding raw edges can make a simple item look and feel really special, or how to get facings to lie flat, all those sorts of things that lots of people have fiddly problems with, and which would be really helpful! I just wish they would include a few minutes, literally 4 or 5 would do it, so that people get to improve as they watch and perhaps have courage to try something more...
But I do enjoy it. I tend to watch a whole series over a couple of days.Be Kind. Stay Safe. Break the Chain. Save Lives. ⭐️2025 Savings Pot Challenge: As a monthly amount, running total = £299.00

Hi everyone, now caught up with about 3 week's worth of posts, family member's illness and death meant that I had been rather unfocussed generally, but trying to get a grip now and given myself a virtual kick up the rear.
Thinking of rears I have a spend to declare, having finally retired several very tatty pairs of knickers, I am now the proud owner of 6 pairs of new black ones. Will that be 12 ration points? The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time. (Abraham Lincoln)9 -
Oh @maddiemay I am sorry to read that - do be gentle on yourself. Three weeks is not long at all, and these days we are deprived of some of the things that usually help us processing grief and loss, such as the funeral and the talking that goes on at and after, and so on...
It's good to hear about new knicks! I think 6 pairs is 12 points, yes. Hurrear (it's like Hurrah but for a rear!)2025 remaining: 37 coupons from 66:

@maddiemay - I am so sorry to hear your news. Do be kind to yourself and don’t expect to work miracles for a while, OK?
@CraftyLittleLisa - That dress sounds lovely. Can’t wait for the warm weather so that you can wear it. Also, good luck reworking the PJ bottoms into trousers. You will have to do a show-and-tell when you’ve finished.
