Money Moral Dilemma: Who should pay for my daughter's broken phone?

So let's go with your logic, based on what you say,if she was at school the teacher should pay,if she was at a large store in the highstreet they should pay.I know, let's all grow up shall we,how about teaching her responsibility for what's happened, her dad didn't break it,you didn't break it and i didn't break it.Next time get it insured and stop passing the buck.

I agree with most of the above comments. Children have to learn that things don't always get replaced if they get broken...that carelessness has consequences. I don't think either you or your former partner should automatically buy your daughter a new phone. You have already been given some very good ideas as to how to deal with the situation...why not try one of them?0

It doesn't guarantee the screen won't break but does make it less likely as the screen protector will absorb some of the impact force.roddydogs said:A screen protector won't stop it breaking.0 -
Your daughter should pay.0 -
If the girl is old enough to have a phone, then I'm afraid she needs to be responsible for it. A hard lesson to learn, but an important one in life, which she will remember. She will really value the next one.1

11-year-olds own £110 phones
Buy her the cheapest one you can find until she is old enough to treat her property with respect! I purchased my Wileyfox phone over 4 years ago never had any problems with it!

My main concern is - why does an 11yr old need a mobile phone? If she does, why not a cheap basic one because accidents DO happen and she's a child for goodness sake, why a fancy, expensive all singing/dancing model? Or is this a peer pressure/keeping up with the Joneses lark?
Isn't accidental damage to a mobile covered by Mum or Dad's house contents insurance? Mine is.
I don't think Mum or Dad should be coughing up for a repair or new phone, the 11yr old should be taught it's her responsibility to look after her possessions carefully or pay the price - no phone now or pay for a repair and save for another herself, or maybe have a slightly better model for a birthday or Christmas gift.0 -
If Dad's household insurance doesn't cover it (most policies cover accidents to visitor's possessions) then your daughter has a phone with a broken screen until she gets it mended - her phone, her actions, her responsibility. If you don't think she's old enough to be responsible for her own phone then why get her one?

Dumb question.
You get the screen repaired. She's 11 years old.. get insurance.
How terrible to make someone else pay!
If it broke in the street does the council pay?

As you bought the phone and your daughter broke it, I can not see why it has anything to do with her Father, either make her pay for it with pocket money or doing chores, to teach her to look after stuff better, or you pay for it1
