Money Moral Dilemma: Who should pay for my daughter's broken phone?

  • Mum paid for phone originally. Daughter probably needs one if walking to and from school.
£100 is cheap so don't tar mum as irresponsible.
Phone broke whilst with dad so dad pays for it.

Its not cool to have a case, only old people use them!
Give daughter the choice between which of these 2 options is the least cool:

    Phone with case
    No phone at all

  • No. He didn't buy her the phone, he didn't decide not to insure it and he didn't break it. This is in no way his fault. You - or even better your daughter - should pay for it.
  • So this is this year's MSE clickbait
  • I can see why you and her father are not together as you appear to be taking every opportunity to blame him for something. It is irrelevant where your daughter was when it was broken by accident, assuming her dad did not break it himself. She is a child, accidents happen, if you did not insure it that is your choice, although for a £100 phone, insurance is probably not worth it. Her dad might want to pay for it anyway for her sake if you can't or won't sort it,  but there is absolutely no 'should' about it simply because it was in his house.
  • Might be good to buy a payg phone for £15 from Tesco until the daughter has decided to be more careful. You can always replace it as a reward when her psyche has pulled round.
Alternateively, does your/her lifestyle permit a temporary mobile free existence for a while?

    Are you taking the mick?

If it broke while she was on the bus, should the bus driver pay for it?

If you dropped your phone at someones funeral, would you claim its repair off their estate?

Nobody has asked how the phone got smashed.  How can we answer the question without all the relevant information?
It's an MSE dilemma, you don't get to ask questions. You only go on the ridiculously limited info they give.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....
  • My son wrote off his car while driving with his mum as a passenger. Should she pay?😂
  • She's 11 years old, for goodness sake, have some common sense and don't buy such an expensive phone for such a young person - and if you do, then insure it. Let her do without for a while (but only if it's for her use, rather than to keep in touch with you), so that she realises that money/phones don't grow on trees. Then you and her Dad should jointly fund (a cheaper) replacement, ie functional but possibly without all the bells and whistles that she might have come to expect.
