Need help buying a mattress that would help with common old mattress back pain, need a double size with £500 budget.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
It varies with the person. I am 12 stone and 5’ 10”. I had to dump a medium Harrison Spinks mattress as it gave me back ache. Far too soft. It was also too heavy to turn. I now use my old medium firm foam mattress, it’s comfy. I like firmer mattresses.

Pocket spring mattresses gradually sag with age, but can last ten years or more. For £500 they will have cheap foams rather than natural fibre fillings.

Perhaps the best option is a mattress with a good return policy as it’s impossible to test a mattress in a shop. Ergoflex get good reviews and have a trial period. Ergoflex use a higher quality viscoelastic foam on top than many others and have a long warranty. There are lots of mattress in a bag products eg Emma, which get good reviews, if you can stomach the twee names.

I am going for a latex mattress from Latex Sense, latex is cooler than other foams. A bit more expensive though.

This is one of those purchases you should factor longevity

Our Tempur is touching 16years and still fine, cost us about 70p a week and going down

The Ergoflex is basically the same as the medium firm Tempur, without showroom and marketing costs.

I've just bought an emma mattress, they had it 35% off in a black Monday sale.
Wow, its the best thing I've ever slept on, by miles. I wish I'd bought one before.
If you do go for an emma, or similar, ensure you have a small gap on your bed slats (if you have slats, that is) mine had a 7cm gap, so I bought 8 more slats to fill the gaps. The gaps are now less than 1cm which is ideal.

We bought an Emma in the summer sale (recommended by relatives). It’s warmer than our previous mattress but no regrets at all and definitely less aches.

dont buy full price though as they do quite a few good offers through the year

  • I’ve had a simba pro for the last 3 weeks and can’t fault it yet. Very comfortable. No back aches. Obviously still very new but I’d recommend for now.

Apparently the like of Emma and Simba mattresses are very warm to sleep on as they are basically foam. Being foam, I'm not convinced how long they'll last.
Our last mattress was a Sealy which was still like new after 8 years. I've just replaced it as I've now gone from a double to a kingsize. I've gone for another Sealy jubilee latex which is very comfy. I'd recommend looking at thesleepshop website once you've found the one you want as they seemed to be much more competitive on price than anywhere else I found.

I bought an Otty, it is the best mattress I have owned. So comfortable, has fixed my back pain. Would definitely recommend
