2000 pocket sprung medium firm, not pillow topped or memory foam. They do need to be turned on a regular basis. I recently bought one for this amount on ebay.1

Do not go for a firm to help back pains. It is an old wives tale. A firm mattress will only cause pressure points which will make you toss and turn during the night. You want to feel like you are sleeping in your mattress rather than on it.
As a guide, Vi-Spring weight guides are 0-11 stone soft, 11-16 stone medium, 16+ firm.
I hope that helps a bit2 -

Of course it is all preference still. The above is a guide. I fall into the medium category but sleep on soft just fine. My point was that if you're after a mattress to help with a bad back, don't go too firm.unforeseen said:

I keep seeing adverts on the shopping channel for dormeo mattresses. I was actually thinking of buying one myself. they have a good website, and positive reviews.1

I'd recommend looking at johnryanbydesign.co.uk - a small firm that produce very good quality mattresses. I've had one of their Origins Pocket Latex beds for about 3 or 4 years now, it still shows no sign of wear and is the best bed I sleep in (compared with my own previous beds). Their Origins Pocket bed is available in a firmer 2000 spring count, though is a stretch on your budget - they do sell on graded returns which would be worth a look at. I can attest their returns policy is no-nonsense - I ordered a bed that simply wouldn't fit up the stairs. The delivery guys took it away, and returned a week later with base that divided into four sections, a headboard in two plus our mattresses were zip and link.
They also have plenty of articles about mattress quality, good sleep, etc.1 -
Everyone I know who's purchased an Emma mattress has raved about it.
