Hi all. I am looking at moving from Liverpool to Brighton on 18th January but I am doing so alone and have never moved this far before and with large items.
I need some help! First of all - is anyvan any good? They can beat any price apparently and reviews seem to be good.
Secondly - has anyone any ideas on the logistics of this? Even if I pay £60+ extra for a 2 hour slot (the price goes up the smaller the time slot), it is going to be a challenge timing the train so I get there before the removal van... I thought of asking my landlord here perhaps to let them in on the day if I book an early train. I wonder if they text you on the day with an idea of when they will arrive if you don't pay extra for the narrow time slot?
Lastly - I'm moving to a flat on quite a busy road in brighton. I don't have a parking pass or anything yet and even if I did I believe parking is tricky on that road. Will this be a problem? I imagine they will just park anywhere and put their hazards on but perhaps I'm being optimistic.
Thanks for all your help!

I imagine if they get a £100 parking ticket that you will pay ?
Plan B would be to get family, friends, or man with a van to move your possessions and you from Liverpool to Brighton.
    Not going to be cheap.
    Do you drive yourself ?
Can you ask someone with a older driving licence who can hire a transit with a tail lift ?
Now Liverpool to Brighton is over 270 miles and would take 5 hours in a loaded transit or removal van which needs to be loaded and unloaded.
Then you need to return the van to Liverpool or the removal firm need to drive back.
    One bloody long tiring day.
If you can get all your stuff into one big box transit van I would hire it for the weekend.
    Friday to Monday

You could check on the Brighton council website or ring them about getting a parking permit for the day !
    Start packing and collecting boxes.
Get rid of stuff you have not used in 2 years.
Fail to plan and plan to fail.
This one is down to you to sort.
Removal firms are totally snowed under due to stamp duty holiday so either book early or get help

Not had to do it for a while but when we did as far as I can recall the removals company asked us to get in touch with the council and arrange some sort of temporary parking permit for the day.......?

I would hire a large van (depending on the stuff you have) from the likes of Enterprise etc, do a one-way hire and move the stuff yourself. When you arrive, you can put a piece of paper in the windscreen saying that you are moving into the property (i.e. Unloading) and perhaps rope in some family members to help. Dad or Mum, or even Gran could sit in the van and warn off any Parking Tickets.

Of course, you could use the likes of Pickfords etc, but thats mega expensive.

It sounds like you are going from a flat to a flat? Do you need to move everything? Can you not sell the larger items (Sofa's, Wardrobes etc, and buy them whilst down south?)

I don't have any family down there unfortunately and I'd be nervous about driving a removals van :/ I've only just bought my sofa and it was expensive so I'm reluctant to sell it really... I have a piano, tv etc too..

I drive but wouldn't fancy driving a removals van :/ I have a sofa, piano, table and chairs, few small furniture items and probably around 10 boxes max.
  • Just something to think about although I can't vouch for the value of the piano but when you take into account moving costs is it worth holding onto the sofa and table and chairs etc? I have just moved from Bristol to Newcastle and sold anything that would have cost me money to have in storage. You can pick up stuff pretty cheap 2nd hand.

Sofa was £1,000.. and I guess I'd still be paying a fair bit for them to take the rest of my stuff anyway?

It sounds more like "normal van" size you'd need rather than "removal" anything - unless it's massive sofa and grand piano etc.
For parking restrictions I'd expect there's a way of booking an exemption from the council (which also means you actually get a space). Ah yes, here you go:
