Last time we stayed in a travelodge the smoking and non smoking rooms were interchangeable and we passed a member of staff sticking a room number over the smoking sign on the door of a room and being liberal with the air freshener inside!

Contrary to all the other opinions, I think you have a strong case for a refund. As an ex-smoker, I agree that getting a non-smoking room when you ordered a smoking room is extremely inconvenient. Why should you go outside? You specifically booked a smoking room. In my opinion, that makes the ability to smoke in the room a key requirement of the contract, which the hotel is now reneging on.
  • Hi all, heres the problem. I booked online, a smoking room for 2 nights for 21/22 Dec using the saver option only to be told two weeks later by email that this hotel had gone over to completely non smoking. I eventually found the number to ring for bookings, but was repeatedly told by an operator & then a supervisor that, it is a saver room & therefore cannot be refunded & that a non smoking room is a suitable alternative ! They also told me that the only way to complain is by email or in writing to customer services. I have emailed, it stated that I would get a response within 10 days.... well this is day 9 & I am still waiting for responses from 18 months ago so I do not hold out too much hope.
    My questions are this..
1 Does anyone know of a number that I can ring directly for customer services ?
2 £ 58 is a relatively small sum of money but is there any body that I can go to to try & reclaim this money ?
3 Yes I am a smoker so I know that the sympathy level will be low but... is a non smoking room really a suitable alternative ? It could easily be a room that has shower only as an alternative to a bath etc etc
I look forward to you comments/help please?
    Regards
    Ray

    Hey Ray.I'm a non-smoker...detest the stuf.

But if you booked a smoking room - then thats what you should get from Travelodge! And I'll fight for your right!

Why should you have to go outside? If thats what you wanted - you wold have booked a non-smoking room in the first instance!

    Good luck!

Dunno about England but up here all hotel rooms are legally non-smoking unless it has decent ventilation and they make it a designated smoking area, and they have to have inspections etc

We regularly stay in Travelodge in Glasgow and they still have smoking rooms, and can request it when booking online

Looking at in reverse, If I'd booked a non-smoking room and was given a smoking room I would want a refund or a change.

Also since you had made a specific request which can not be accommadated then again a refund should be agreed.

The booking fee is not refundable if you cancel but in this case, the OP booked a smoking room which was accepted by Travelodge. They then cancelled the smoking room so they should offer a full refund.

    From the Travelodge T&Cs

    20. Smoking rooms are subject to availability. Please specify if you require a smoking room when booking. Please be aware that all public areas in our hotels are designated as non-smoking and that all our hotels rooms will be non-smoking by the end of 2007.

    32. If you make a cancellation then we will not refund you any money you have paid (including for any extras). If you do wish to make a cancellation to your booking we would be grateful if you would inform us using https://www.travelodge.co.uk/manage_your_bookings/ as soon as possible however we will not refund you any money you have paid (including for any extras).

    43. You acknowledge that we may not be able to provide one or more rooms and/or all or certain of our products and/or services due to any adverse event which happens which is beyond our reasonable control. As such, we shall not be in breach of these terms, nor liable for any failure to perform any of our obligations in relation to your booking, arising from: 1. acts of God, including but not limited to fire, flood, earthquake, windstorm or other natural disaster; 2. fire, explosion or accidental damage; 3. extreme adverse weather conditions; 4. collapse of building structures, failure of plant machinery, machinery, computers or vehicles; 5. interruption or failure of utility service, including but not limited to electric power, gas or water; and/or 6. any other act, event, omission or accident which is beyond our reasonable control.

The OP requested a smoking room (and before end 2007) and the booking was accepted. The OP has not cancelled the smoking room, Travelodge have and are providing a non-smoking room as an alternative. The OP does not have to accept this and so Travelodge should refund the booking fee plus any other expenses incurred. They cannot get out of it under section 43 because the allocation of smoking rooms is under the reasonable control of Travelodge.
