Like the 25 he’d previously sold to a firm of electrical contractors that wanted to put ladders on the roof.
Ouch! Mind you, it is pretty stupid to have roof rails for cosmetics only.

  • I think if it ever came up in court a judge wouldn't buy the "cosmetic only" argument.

Nah the cosmetic only is purely to avoid having to get type approval, they know people will still use them or they'd save money by just not fitting them.

The OP ordered a vehicle with roof rails able to perform a certain function. If MG are not able to deliver the same to him then he may well have a case that they are unable to fulfill the contract and he should be refunded his deposit.
OP said Today at 12:43PM>> I didn’t have detailed discussions with the salesman,<<
So if did not mention using a roof rack for bikes then, it's thin ice.
Also I would not want to be using racks when the manufacture has said has a Zero limit. Any issue that cause a ins claim and there is going to be trouble.

It seems many manufactures are not going through as much homologation or type approval on cars. As trying to find a EV that has been approved to tow is a major issue.
I know the OP has had a good outcome but
I struggle to understand why you think  when the Sept brochure states that the roof rails will take 50KG  and a bike is shown the OP would have any need to tell the  human salesman he wanted to do just that.
What meaningful conversation could he possibly have with said human  salesman about a bike on the roof?
The brochure clearly is the "salesman" in terms of answering the question "If I buy this car can I put a bike on the roof ?" !

    Car is delivered.
Buyer: "Where's the bike? The brochure showed a bike on the roof. Where is it?"

    Very good outcome.
I don’t tend to mention anything about the standard specification of my car to the salesman let alone get to to write it down. If it says it comes with climate control in the brochure then I expect it to have climate control.

I doubt any "reasonable person" would assume the car came with the bike attached, but I also doubt any reasonable person would expect a car shown with a bike attached wouldn't be capable of taking a bike. Bikes are removable, roof rails aren't.

If I'm buying a new car, do I need to get the dealership to sign a spec sheet for all the bits I say I need?

Back in the day it could have been a scantily clad nubile reclining seductively in the front passenger seat.

    Even in those very non-PC times I doubt any new owner ever penned the following;

”Dear Sir, I’ve received my new MG, please send my bimbo”.

Perhaps not, but I imagine they would have been a few complaints if it turned out that the passenger seat was for decoration only and it was illegal to carry a passenger at all; bimbo or otherwise.
